Community engagement and health disparity research first started 20 years ago when North Carolina Central University's esteemed Julius L. Chambers Biomedical Biotechnology Research Institute made it a priority across its various programs. While much was accomplished during that time, it soon became clear that a standalone program was necessary to fully understand the health-specific challenges facing medically underserved communities. That is how the Health Equity, Environment, and Population Health program, known as HOPE, was born at NCRC.

Duke’s MURDOCK Study has launched a COVID-19 research project to follow the health of hundreds of North Carolina volunteers for several months. The study will also test a sub-group for COVID-19 infection and potential immunity to the novel coronavirus that causes the disease.

October 2018 marks the 10th-year anniversary of the UNC Nutrition Research Institute here in Kannapolis. In 2008, we opened our doors with only 2 faculty and 9 staff. A decade later, we have 16 faculty, 68 science/administrative staff, and continue to grow. What was at one point the largest textile mill in the world, has become the North Carolina Research Campus, housing corporate and private researchers and eight universities including UNC Chapel Hill, home of the NRI.
