This summer, we are excited to welcome two engineering interns to our team!

Nia Spears is back for her second summer at DuBois Consultants as a Structural Engineering Intern. In May, Nia graduated from the University of Missouri–Columbia with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering and minors in Architectural Studies, Construction Management, and Engineering Sustainability. In August, she will move to Indiana to begin pursuing a Master of Architectural Engineering degree at Purdue University. This summer, Nia is assisting our structural team on the extremely important exercise of updating standard details and calculations, as well as assisting our Resident Project Representative team on project sites.

Ahnaf Shahriar joined the team this summer as our Civil Engineering Intern. He is currently a junior at William Jewell College, where he is studying civil engineering with an interest in transportation. Upon graduation, Ahnaf plans to pursue a career in the Kansas City engineering industry. This summer, he is shadowing our civil engineering team on active transportation projects, gaining experience with Civil 3D and Bluebeam, and supporting staff during site visits and stormwater inspections.

Internships are an important part of DuBois Consultants' commitment to developing the next generation of engineers. By providing hands-on experience and mentorship, we help students bridge the gap between the classroom and the professional world while exploring the many opportunities within the engineering industry.

We had the pleasure of presenting at Operation Breakthrough- Black & Veatch's Summer STEM Program this week, sharing our passion for traffic engineering with the next generation of innovators. The program is designed to expose students to real-world STEM experiences while fostering a growth mindset, confidence, and resilience for the future.

Our President, Cervente Sudduth, and Jr. Structural Engineer, Morris Igene, introduced students to the fundamentals of traffic engineering, the types of projects traffic engineers work on, and the future of the profession.

To put their new knowledge into practice, students became engineers themselves! They learned how to scale the intersection outside the Operation Breakthrough center, identify pavement markings, and think critically about why those elements are incorporated into roadway design. They also explored the purpose of road signs through an interactive matching activity that challenged them to pair each sign with the appropriate scenario.

As a Black-owned engineering firm, opportunities like this bring our mission full circle. Inspiring young minds to explore careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, while also exposing them to examples of successful entrepreneurship, is essential to building a stronger future. It is a commitment that has been part of DuBois Consultants since the very beginning. Thank you to Operation Breakthrough-Black & Veatch for inviting us to participate in this impactful program and share our experience in the growing field of traffic engineering with the next generation of STEM leaders!

This week we are excited to welcome Tori Trageser to our team as our new First Impressions Coordinator!

As the first point of contact for many of our clients and partners, we knew it was important to find someone who is warm, welcoming, and a true reflection of our core values – Tori truly embodies this. From the moment we met her, we knew she would be a wonderful addition to our team.

Outside of the office, Tori enjoys spending time with family, friends, and pets, traveling, and baking and selling cakes. We cannot wait for everyone to get to know her and join us in welcoming Tori to the team!

We are celebrating Nazia Salam’s four-year anniversary at DuBois Consultants!

Nazia joined DuBois Consultants in 2022 as a Junior Civil Engineer. Prior to DuBois, she conducted research in water and wastewater treatment and taught undergraduate civil engineering courses at William Jewell College with an emphasis on sustainable design.

On our team, Nazia specializes in environmental and water resources engineering and has extensive expertise in site civil design, inflow and infiltration studies, water main replacement and relocation, green infrastructure design, and more. She is also a certified Envision Sustainability Professional, bringing a strong focus on sustainability to every project.

Her natural leadership abilities and collaborative spirit play a key role in our team’s effectiveness. We are so thankful to have her on our team!

Our team recently had the pleasure of attending the ribbon cutting ceremony for the Blue River Biosolids Facility. This project is a true testament to Kansas City’s commitment to improving its water system through investment in state-of-the-art technology. Pictured behind the team members who helped make this project possible is the Thermal Hydrolysis Process (THP) system - the first use of THP technology in the Midwest. Thank you to Black & Veatch and Goodwin Brothers Construction Co. for bringing DuBois Consultants onto the team!

Happy Black History Month from all of us at DuBois Consultants. One hundred years ago, Carter G. Woodson created what was then Negro History Week to encourage the study and recognition of Black history at a time when it was often excluded from textbooks and public conversation. That single week eventually grew into the month-long observance we know today. Reaching the 100th year is a reminder that preserving and sharing these stories has always required intention. As a Black-owned engineering firm, we’re proud to carry that legacy forward in our own way by building spaces and contributing to a more inclusive future.

Even though we are halfway through the month, there is still time to celebrate and support local events right here in Kansas City and Wichita! Check out a few we recommend:

Visit the Kansas City Negro Leagues Baseball Museum — admission is free all month thanks to the Kansas City Royals Foundation.

Check out the Exploration Place in Wichita as it features a daily large-scale outdoor exhibit honoring African American scientists and STEM leaders. This week honors Dr. Donald Jackson, and next week will highlight Col. George Boyd.

Travel to KC’s Gem Theater for the Reel Black Film Fest 2026. Admission is free (registration required).

February 23:
Visit the American Jazz Museum’s Blue Room in Kansas City for “Poetry & Blue”, an open mic celebrating Black creativity through storytelling and music.

DuBois Consultants kicked off 2026 with a lively and celebratory Annual Meeting last week. It was a meaningful opportunity to step away from our day-to-day work, reflect on the successes of 2025, and align around a shared vision for the year ahead. We were honored to be joined by Dr. Angela Jackson, best-selling author of The Win-Win Workplace, who challenged and inspired our team as we move forward and grow through leadership.

On February 6, 2006, DuBois Consultants opened the doors to our second office in Wichita, KS. Over the past two decades, we’ve been honored to collaborate with engineers, architects, contractors, developers, and elected officials across the city and surrounding regions. We're deeply grateful for the partnerships we've built and the projects we've brought to life together.

From our work on the state-of-the-art Wichita Water Facility, to the preservation of the Historic McAfee Pool House, upgrades to the City’s Wastewater Treatment Plant BNR facilities, enhancements to fan-favorite Buffalo Park, and much more, serving the Wichita community has been a true privilege.

A special shoutout goes to Jennifer Brehon, our dedicated Business Development Specialist, who has been with us every step of the way. For 20 years, Jennifer has been instrumental in forging strong relationships, growing our presence, and championing the values that define us: excellence, quality, and commitment. Today, we celebrate not only our Wichita office’s anniversary, but also the remarkable impact Jennifer has had.

Later this spring, we will be hosting a happy hour to celebrate DuBois’ 20 years in Wichita! More details will be released later this month, and we look forward to seeing our valued partners there. It will be a wonderful opportunity to reconnect, celebrate our journey, and look ahead to what’s next. We are proud of what we’ve accomplished, but we truly believe we are just getting started.
