"What a Sewing Micro Factory Looks Like and How It Operates" was the topic for my visiting students from the latest Sewing Salon Training Program graduating class of 2024 from The Sewing Labs, a non-profit organization teaching the legacy of sewing to all ages. TThe Sewing Labsis an inclusive and welcoming community where they provide a safe and loving atmosphere for all. I talked about the flexibility having your own micro factory gives you and the steps it takes to get started.

Home Based Small Batch Micro Factories offer sustainable manufacturing solutions for small brands as they allow quick turnaround at a lower cost to the overall budget. It reduces waste and overproduction ensuring only the necessary amount of product is made.

Yes, it costs more per item being made domestically but supporting your local Independent Contractor makes it easier for you to check on your product frequently, minimizing mistakes, and you don't have to pay for shipping your products. It's common in Latin countries and needs to be more accessible here. It keeps most of the money local, so it's a Win/Win.

I'm launching "ARTISAN SMALL BATCH ACADEMY" as part of my offerings to my business so we can get more micro factories going. I already spend a great deal of time helping stitchers start their own independent sewing contracting businesses and am taking it national so anyone in any town can build their own micro factory and Boost Production.

Anyone sewing their own products would also benefit from my Membership to learn how to Increase Output and Efficiency tips.

Did you know Kansas City was second to NY in fashion manufacturing before it went overseas? My small team made 4,000 finished goods in 12 months. What if that was replicated in every city?

I never thought all my fashion experience would lead me into compression wear and SMALL BATCH MANUFACTURING. “All Roads Lead To Rome”, and in my case, all my little roads led me to the Expert Level in two areas few have traveled. I frequently have felt like I’ve been forging a path with a machete and people coming up behind me are making the road wider. I love mentoring anyone interested in helping domestically made goods happen. Yes, it costs more but is better in the long term for the country and keeps the dollars local. Besides, we all know we need to lower the amount of clothing made on this planet. 🌏

Being in the fashion industry takes strength with a dose of patience. It’s a misnomer to think it’s frivolous and easy. Most of the time we have our hair in a ponytail and are wearing leggings because it’s hard work, mental and physical. Getting my feet wet starting as a teenager and constantly working somehow in the industry gives you a viewpoint from all angles so your expectations are less lofty than starry eyed newcomers.

These days I love the beginning stages of developing products and being in the experimental phases of engineering patterns and having the relationships I have with my clients. This goes for both of my businesses. Because sometimes I’m designing a custom compression garment for a specific situation.

Every day is different for me and that’s one of the best things for happiness and also growth. Thank you, VOYAGE KC for this article!!
