Please read it, this one might actually be helpful 😅.
I've received some questions about the ball valve in irrigation systems and its importance during the winterization process. To help clarify, I've put together some information and included a few pictures for reference.
A ball valve is a type of shut-off valve that controls the flow of water through your irrigation system. It features a rotating ball with a hole in the center, which allows water to pass through when aligned with the pipe. When the ball is turned to block the flow, it effectively stops the water.
This valve is made of PVC and is installed before the backflow preventer IN GROUND (the one that breaks with every freeze and costs you a minimum $300 to replace it ❄️-💰).
Closing the ball valve is a crucial first step in winterizing your irrigation system. By doing so, you prevent any remaining water from flowing through the pipes (including the backflow), reducing the risk of freezing and potential damage when temperatures drop.
If your backflow is damaged and you don't have a main valve, guess what? You will have to shut off the main water line of your home until it gets fixed. A common nightmare every winter.
Properly shutting off the water supply helps ensure that your system remains in good condition throughout the winter months.
If you're preparing to winterize your irrigation system, make sure to locate and close the ball valve first. This small step can help protect your investment and save you from costly repairs in the future (like next week's future 🤣).
If you don't have one or, yours is attached to your backflow...... BIG NO NO. Call us to install one.
