Hey guys!
You may ask "Why does it cost so much to paint my house"? Let me give you a few things to consider:
Prep Work:
the most time consuming activity with painting is the time it takes to prepare the site/house for painting. A good painter will protect you floors, cabinets, fixtures, hinges, furnature, and etc with tarps, plastic, or protective paper so it doesn't get paint on them. Light switches and plug recepltical plates should be removed to prevent them from getting paint on them. Some jobs require areas to be taped to ensure a crisp and clean cut line. This time often takes longer than the actual paint work, but makes a positive effect on a professional outcome.
Wall Height:
If the room height has high ceilings (10 ft or higher) the price will go up because of more work, plus the potential of working off of scaffolding and high ladders makes the work more dangerous. Not to mention that is more paint because 1 can of paint covers 400 square feet of wall/ceiling space. If its exterior painting thats even more dangerous! Just think of it this way: the higher up the worker has to go, the higher the price has to go. But no matter how high the painter has to go, he is still expected to do the job with excellence.
Different Colors/Sheen:
If the painters has to switch colors for different walls, or a different sheen for walls (flat, eggshell, satin, semi gloss) then for the ceiling (usually flat) then the painters have to clean or switch paints and rollers/brushes. This takes more time and more tools to do. This also comes at a premium cost in comparison to painting all the rooms the same color/sheen. Also, certain sheen paints apply better with certain kinds of brushes. An experienced painter usually knows what will yield the best results.
Cost of the paint:
Please understand that when it comes to paint YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR! If the old color is a darker color and the newer color is lighter, you will need to prime the walls first to block out the old color so it wont bleed through the new color (consider that the first coat). Also, know that the cheaper your quality of paint, the more coats will be needed to do the job! A good quality paint (such as Sherwin-Williams, Behr, or PPG) cost more, but will require less coats. Lastly, base molding, door casing, window sills, and doors usually get a high gloss sheen.
Workmanship:
If a painter knows that he does a good professional job with no drip lines, color bleeding, precision cut lines, quality brushes/rollers, or a good sprayer, they will charge according to the expectation of going the extra mile to ensure that they can put their name on the project! When customers twist the contractor's arm to convince them to give you a discount one of two things will happen: (1) They will cut cost on the material, not their labor, or (2) they will lose their intrinsic motivation to stay any extra time to make sure its done to the best of their ability! A contractor/painter/Handyman that has to work at a discounted price has one objective: to get the job done as fast as possible so they to get another job to make up the money/time they lost giving you a discount that they really couldn't afford.
Just wanted to give you our perspective to consider for the next time you ask for a paint estimateπβΌοΈ
