Open the Tesla app and tap Energy. Blue is your home, yellow is solar, green is your Powerwall, and grey is the grid. When the grey line sits above the middle, that's power you're buying from the grid. When it dips below, your house is sending power out. Tap and hold the graph around dinner time and you'll see exactly what was powering the house.

It's like a fitness tracker for your house. It shows what your power did all day.

Just got a Powerwall 3? This is the first screen worth learning. Watching your own graph is the easiest way to see how batteries work at home.

Texas now gives homeowners 5 business days to cancel certain solar contracts, and the salesperson has to sign a short summary with you that shows the monthly payment. It works like a store return window. Read it at the kitchen table, not on the porch.

Dolly was on a free nights plan that looked great on paper.

Wrong plan for her usage. Delivery charges passed straight through. Battery sitting idle while she bought peak power.

Correct provider plus battery optimization changed the whole bill.

Bringing the power back to the people, literally.

The battery settings were backwards. Dead in the morning. Pulling power when it costs the most.

The hardware was fine. The configuration was not.

Texas runs its own power grid and it barely connects to the rest of the country. When did you first find that out?

Quick myth vs fact. Myth: Texas can just pull a bunch of power from other states when it gets tight. Fact: the grid that runs Texas covers about 90 percent of the power used here, and it isn't tied in sync with the eastern or western grids. It can only borrow a little through a few direct current ties. That was on purpose. After the 1935 federal power act, Texas power companies kept the grid inside state lines so federal rate rules would not reach them.

If you've been searching why does texas have its own power grid, or watching texas power grid clips next to electric bill jumps, this is the short version. And it's a big reason I think a home battery backup (and the bigger idea of virtual power plants) matters more here than almost anywhere. The grid can't easily borrow from next door, so power stored at home does more work.
