Flooding is part of the state’s reality, but thanks to the vigilance of 23 local levee boards, heavy rains rarely produce the catastrophic outcomes they once did. With more than half of Louisiana located in a floodplain and 41 percent of the continental United States draining into the Mississippi River Basin, the state faces a uniquely persistent flood risk.
The Association of Levee Boards of Louisiana (ALBL) oversees the containment and management of floodwaters along Louisiana’s major waterways. ALBL coordinates planning, monitoring, and response to reduce that risk and protect communities.
