Flooding is part of the state’s reality, but thanks to the vigilance of 23 local levee boards, heavy rains rarely produce the catastrophic outcomes they once did. With more than half of Louisiana located in a floodplain and 41 percent of the continental United States draining into the Mississippi River Basin, the state faces a uniquely persistent flood risk.

The Association of Levee Boards of Louisiana (ALBL) oversees the containment and management of floodwaters along Louisiana’s major waterways. ALBL coordinates planning, monitoring, and response to reduce that risk and protect communities.

Greenup Industries continues work continues on the West Shore Lake Pontchartrain project. The WSLP project is located in southeast Louisiana on the east bank of the Mississippi River in St. Charles, St. John the Baptist and St. James parishes. This project includes a variety of features, such as levees, floodwalls, and pump stations, and is designed to achieve a 100-year level of risk reduction.

Our work continues at Myrtle Grove in Plaquemines Parish maintaining the New Orleans to Venice (NOV) hurricane levee system. This project involves strengthening levees, specifically targeting areas between Myrtle Grove and Woodpark, to provide protection against storm surge. We are one of the USACE's construction partners and our role is to repair and restore the original project levees and accelerate the completion of unconstructed portions of the authorized project and armor its critical elements.

Update on the Myrtle Grove Project.

This project, critical to the people of Plaquemines Parish, is required to be completed in late
2026, but we are on pace to finish construction well before that date.

Sluice gate drainage structure walls are precast concrete components used in stormwater and water control systems to manage flow. They provide strength and stability along channels, embankments, and drainage outlets, often working with sluice gates and culvert pipes. These walls may also function as headwalls or wingwalls at pipe ends, guiding water, preventing soil erosion, and stabilizing the surrounding area.
