AI + IoT + 24*7 Remote support = Smart Retail Store operations

A prominent U.S. discount retailer aimed to improve occupant comfort, boost energy efficiency, and reduce maintenance costs across 2,100+ stores in 45 states.

The Challenges:

The retailer faced difficulties in reducing energy and maintenance expenses while enhancing occupant comfort. Standardizing HVAC and lighting setups and monitoring all locations from a central hub to address issues and optimize performance proved challenging. Complicating matters, each store had 7-8 rooftop units (RTUs) from different brands.

Solution:

The retailer partnered with Carrier Abound to deploy AI and IoT services across their store network, integrating existing building management systems, sensors, and equipment into the Abound™ Insights platform. The platform analyzed data to identify energy efficiency and operational improvements, advised the impact of issue, and recommended corrective actions and enabled retailer to prioritize tasks. Carrier's 24/7 BluEdge™ Command Centers provided remote diagnostics and technical support, enabling proactive issue resolution. Seamless connectivity to automation software further reduced manual tasks and minimized unscheduled maintenance.

Results:
The collaboration yielded significant benefits:

-Energy Savings: Achieved 104 million kWh savings over four years.
-Operational Efficiency: Resolved 45% of HVAC and lighting work orders remotely, saving over USD 5 million by reducing on-site service visits.
-Maintenance Management: Improved downtime management through prompt action on controller issues and enhanced visibility into work order statuses.
-Weather Preparedness: Maintained operational resilience with weekly weather reports and proactive measures during extreme conditions.
-Demand Response Participation: Configured over 800 stores for Demand Response events by 2023 and initiated an Automated Demand Response program to support grid stability and generate rebates.

The Challenge:
To reduce energy consumption while maintaining occupant comfort. They aimed to reduce energy consumption by 4% in the first year to stay competitive.

The Solution:
Carrier Abound integrated the Abound Insights platform with the retailer's BMS across 1,200+ stores. By analyzing data from 18,500 connected units, the platform delivered actionable insights, supported by BluEdge™ Command Centers offering 24/7 remote assistance to optimize HVAC, lighting, and comfort systems.
