One of the most popular guns used in the American Revolution was nicknamed the Brown Bess, no doubt a reference to its brown color . But what made it brown? Well russeting, or browning, is the process of rustproofing a firearm by coating it with a very thin layer of rust, or red iron oxide. This is different from the more common bluing process, which coats the metal with a layer of magnetite, or black iron oxide.

Originally the Long Land Pattern, the "Brown Bess" musket was the standard weapon of the British Army from the mid-1700s into the 1800s.
