At Flash Firewood Delivery (www.flashfirewood.com), it’s extremely important to us to follow through on what we promise. When we accept a firewood order and say we’ll deliver, we don’t stop until every order is completed.
To give you an idea of what that looks like in real life—our last delivery this past Saturday was at 2:45 a.m. We had been delivering firewood for about 17 hours straight that day, and we had done the same for the three days prior. It had rained most of Friday and continued through the night into Saturday morning. During the final hour of deliveries, the rain picked up, temperatures dropped to 32 degrees, and we were racing to finish before the roads froze. At that point, it felt like only us and a police car were still on the road.
What kept me going was knowing our customers were depending on us. In my mind, I kept thinking: what if the power goes out and this firewood is what keeps them warm? I didn’t want to fail anyone. The entire time, I was quietly praying that our truck and trailet would hold up—that we wouldn’t break down, get stuck, or end up with a flat tire.
Even though placing an order might feel like a simple online transaction, to us it’s a promise. It’s us saying, “We’ve got you. We will get this to you. You can count on us.” That mindset is something we’ve carried for years in our other local business, Shirtzz T-Shirt Shop, which we’ve proudly operated since 2006.
Near the end of our deliveries—cold, soaked, exhausted, and honestly past the point of trying to stay dry—I texted a customer just before 1 a.m. to let them know their firewood had been delivered. The response I received (shown in the photo) instantly lifted my spirits. Knowing that a customer truly appreciated the effort made everything worth it.
I’ve always believed that integrity means doing what you say you’ll do, even when it’s hard or uncomfortable. Interestingly, my wife reminded me that this idea is straight from the Bible—and she was right (again). Psalm 15:4 speaks about keeping your word even when it hurts. One version says it best: When he promises to do something, he always does it.
That’s how I believe business should be done. The rain, the cold, the late nights, and the long days don’t discourage me—because at the end of the day, every order is more than just a click on our website. To us, it’s a promise, and we’ll always do everything within our power to keep it.
