Philadelphia Gear® can offer a variety of custom service solutions, from inspection and repairs to new enclosed drives and Onsite Technical Services (OTS)™. Currently, we are working on a 900 rpm pulverizer gear drive that helps crush coal into a fine powder that becomes the fuel used in a boiler combustion system. We are replacing the worn-out high-speed bevel gear set, old pinions that are exhibiting micro-pitting, and a damaged main shaft that has worn spline teeth. To learn more about this repair, check back in July for the final update!

TECHNICAL TRIVIA: To keep this pulverizer gearbox properly lubricated, it requires almost 200 gallons, or 1,500 lbs. of lubricant.

Philadelphia Gear® is equipped to handle your toughest projects. Recently we received a bowl mill gearbox weighing nearly 61,000 lbs. rated up to 900 horsepower. The gearbox is being used to pulverize coal into powder that fuels the boiler combustion system. Initial inspection revealed damaged roller bearings and thrust pads, worn bevel gears, micro pitting on the pinion, and a corroded input shaft. Facility highlight: Our Philadelphia Gear® Midwest Regional Service Center in Mokena, Illinois, supports power generation, petrochemical, steel, food processing, and water management customers across the region.

The center is a hub of expertise for large MPS 89 pulverizers—machines that grind coal into a fine powder used as fuel in boiler combustion systems. Pulverized coal mixes thoroughly with air, burns faster and more completely, and releases the heat needed to convert boiler water into high pressure steam. That steam drives turbines that generate electricity. Our team provides specialized inspection, repair, and rebuilding services to keep these systems operating safely, efficiently, and reliably.
