The verdict is in.

Yesterday we asked which premium roof wins on a $2M Texas estate.

The conversation got real ….homeowners voting standing seam for the architectural look, fellow roofers chiming in, and even some great technical points about reflectivity and metal profiles.

Here's our expert take after years of installing premium roofs across Texas:

🏆 Winner: Stone-Coated Steel

It's not the most expensive option.
It's not the trendiest.
But it's the smartest investment for a Texas luxury home, and here's why:

🔹 Lifespan: 50+ years with a transferable warranty.

🔹 Hail-proof: Class 4 impact rated — the highest available.

After the 2024 storms across Houston and Montgomery County, our stone-coated steel installations had zero damage claims.

🔹 Wind resistance: Rated for 120 MPH winds.

🔹 Insurance savings: Most major carriers in Texas offer 15-30% premium reductions for Class 4 roofs.

🔹 Curb appeal: Modern stone-coated steel mimics architectural shingles, slate, or shake …without the weight, cost, or maintenance.

🔹 Energy efficiency: Reflects heat instead of absorbing it. Lower attic temps, lower AC bills.

Slate is timeless but costs 3-4x more and weighs so much it sometimes requires structural reinforcement.

Standing seam is beautiful (and we install plenty of it) … but it can be louder during Texas thunderstorms, dents from hail more easily, and copper reflectivity can be a factor in tighter neighborhoods.

Stone-coated steel quietly does everything well, for less money, with longer protection.

If you own a custom home or estate valued at $1M+ from The Woodlands to Lake Conroe to Magnolia …. your roof should be working as hard as your investment portfolio.

☕ Monday Roofing Tip:

Most homeowners don’t realize their roof should be inspected twice a year …once in spring, once in fall.

Catching small issues like lifted shingles or cracked flashing early can save thousands down the road.

✅Quarter-sized hail (1”) on north side of Nac

Why did my properly-installed 130mph wind rated shingles blow off in an 80mph wind?

1) Sustained wind reported by National Weather Service is 80mph, measured at 10m

2) Conversion to an average engineering assumption of 1.4x makes a single realistic weather event of 112mph during 80mph sustained winds

3) Ground level conversion back DOWN to 95.2mph, since windspeed would be higher at 33ft than 6ft

4) Adjust for roof height, exposure, shape, and directional lie makes the wind exposure to the shingles at a conservative 138.04mph

5) Edge uplift equivalent puts it well over 150mph

⚠️ North Houston / Montgomery County heads up

Meteorologists are showing strong storms, heavy rain, and high winds moving into the Houston area over the next couple days.

Quick thing most homeowners don’t realize:

Most roof leaks don’t happen because the roof is old…
They happen because wind lifts one or two shingles just enough for water to get underneath.

Before the storms hit, it’s worth doing a 30-second check from the ground:

• look for shingles that look crooked or lifted
• check for debris piled in roof valleys
• make sure gutters aren’t clogged

Those three things cause most storm leaks in Houston.

If anyone has questions about their roof before or after the storms, feel free to ask here. Happy to help neighbors out.

Stay safe everyone.
