This Piper had been sitting on the ramp for over 5 months in Puerto Rico, uncovered and fully exposed to salt, humidity, and environmental buildup.

This isn’t just surface dirt. It’s long-term contamination that bonds to the aircraft and starts affecting the finish over time if left untreated.

In this case, the level of buildup required a full wet wash process to safely and effectively remove embedded contaminants.

A wet wash is used when an aircraft has heavy environmental exposure or extended time on the ramp.

For regularly maintained aircraft, a dry wash is often the preferred method, allowing frequent cleaning without unnecessary water exposure and maintaining surface condition between major services.

It’s not about using “more water” or “less water.” It’s about choosing the correct process based on the aircraft’s condition and environment.

This brightwork was in rough shape, heavy oxidation all over.

And this is something I see often in aviation detailing. Polished aluminum doesn’t fail overnight, it slowly loses protection and starts reacting with the environment: humidity, sun exposure, contaminants, improper washing, and lack of maintenance.

The result is a dull chalky finish, loss of reflection, light pitting, and in more advanced cases a rough surface that needs deeper correction.

I did a small test section first to see what was actually left underneath the oxidation. The aluminum itself was still solid, it was just contaminated and unprotected.

This is where most people get it wrong, polishing alone is not a solution. Without proper process and protection, oxidation comes back fast, sometimes within weeks depending on exposure.

Proper brightwork is a system: inspection, decontamination, controlled correction, refinement, and protection.
