An Update from the UT Reliability & Maintainability Center

We wanted to share a quick update with our RMC community.

Early Friday morning, a water main serving the sprinkler system in the UT Conference Center Building ruptured, sending water and mud into portions of the first floor and tunnel level. As a result, the building is temporarily closed while crews work to restore power, fire suppression systems, and affected spaces.

While our offices may look a little different for the time being, RMC is still open for business!

Our staff is working remotely, and our upcoming courses and events will continue as scheduled. Some sessions will temporarily move to alternate locations on campus or in downtown Knoxville. Participants will receive location information for their specific course or event.

Our team remains available by phone and email, so please continue reaching out to us as usual.

Not a chart. Not a case study. Not a hypothetical.

It looks like flooded spaces, damaged infrastructure, emergency response, disrupted operations, and a long road to recovery.

For those of us working in reliability and maintainability, images like these are a powerful reminder that failure has real consequences. The impact can extend far beyond a single asset—affecting facilities, operations, schedules, budgets, and the people who depend on them.

This is why we focus on more than simply fixing equipment after it fails. Reliability means identifying risk, understanding failure modes, planning for the unexpected, and building systems that can recover when something goes wrong.

The goal is not just to respond to failure. It is to learn from it, reduce the likelihood of recurrence, and build greater resilience for the future.

Are we measuring whether training works—or simply whether it happened?

During our recent RMC Members Meeting, 65% of respondents said they do not measure the effectiveness of the training their teams receive. At the same time, 68% said today’s skilled-workforce challenges require both adjustments to training content and more on-the-job training. This is needed to address the lowered entry-level requirements mainly due to skilled trade shortages.

The takeaway is clear: training must be practical, aligned with organizational goals, and connected to measurable improvements in performance.
