Day 1 at the Schluter WorkBox and already a ton to take away.

We’re out here learning from some of the best in the industry—refining techniques and dialing in details that most people don’t even realize make a difference.

A lot of what we’re working on builds on skills we already use—but takes them to another level:

* Templating layouts for precise cuts and perfect fixture placement
* Dialing in measurements so everything lines up exactly how it should
* Mitered edges instead of metal trim for a cleaner, more high-end finish
* Proper thinset coverage using our go-to euro trowel method

Also got familiar with slab handling systems, slab carts, and rail-style cutters for large format tile—serious tools for delivering precision and consistency at a higher level.

At the end of the day, this is the kind of stuff that separates a decent tile job from one that actually turns out the way it should. Always trying to get better and bring that back home.

This week we flew across the country to get hands-on with Gauged Porcelain Thin Panel (GPTP) installation and advanced methods — and I’ll be honest, it’s eye-opening.

Not just because of how much there is to learn…
but because of how far behind our area really is when it comes to design, materials, and proper installation methods.

There’s a big difference between:
👉 “I’ve done tile before”
and
👉 actually understanding how to build something that’s going to last, perform, and look right years down the road

What we’re seeing out here:

* Modern systems that eliminate common failure points
* Materials that outperform what’s typically being used back home
* Installation methods that are precise, repeatable, and built to hold up
* Design approaches that actually elevate a space instead of just “finishing it”

Back home, there’s too much of:

* Outdated methods still being used like they’re acceptable
* Products getting installed that shouldn’t be anywhere near a wet area
* Work being done without understanding the why behind it
* Missed opportunities to create something truly clean and well thought out

And the reality is — a lot of it isn’t even intentional.
It’s just a lack of exposure to what’s actually possible and what’s actually correct.

That’s why we’re here.

We’re putting in the time, money, and effort to learn from people who do this at a high level — so we can bring those standards back to La Grande and the surrounding areas.

Also glad TheChris BabcockChris Babcock and Zach Bean of Doren Tile & Stone were able to make the trip with me — always better leveling up alongside guys who take their work seriously.

Because at the end of the day, this isn’t about hype.
It’s about doing things the right way:
✔️ Proper prep
✔️ Correct materials
✔️ Skilled installation
✔️ Clean, lasting results

If we’re going to take on a project, it’s going to be built with intention — not guesswork.

• Deep soaker tub (and yes, it was HEAVY)

• Collaboration with Better Homes Construction and Doren Tile & Stone

The homeowner works remotely and didn’t want weeks of disruption.

So we compressed the schedule and completed the project in nine working days while she was out of town for the holidays.

Long days. Careful coordination. Clean ex*****on.

She came home to a finished bathroom.

WHEN WATER DAMAGE HITS, DETAILS MATTER.

This project started with a leaking refrigerator water line.

The result?
Damaged carpet pad, compromised insulation, and sections of kitchen tile removed during water abatement.

We handled the restoration from start to finish:

• Replaced carpet pad and re-stretched existing carpet
• Installed new trim
• Replaced crawlspace insulation
• Carefully demo’d and re-tiled the kitchen floor
• Salvaged and reinstalled tile to seamlessly patch the entry

The goal wasn’t just repair.
It was to make it look like it never happened.

MORE THAN JUST TILE.

This tub-to-shower conversion required more than setting tile.

We removed the existing handicap unit, opened the wall, modified framing and plumbing, reinforced the subfloor, and finished with a clean, durable walk-in shower system.

Projects like this highlight the difference between surface updates and full-scope remodel work.
