SEDS UCSD

SEDS UCSD SEDS UCSD is collection of motivated, passionate students who aim to create the future of space technology.

SEDS@UCSD is a pre-professional organization and one chapter of an international coalition of schools that focus on promoting space exploration and development through different mediums. We are a tight knit group of some of the brightest students at UC San Diego who aim to develop space by lowering the cost of getting to orbit. We are working with NASA Marshall Space Flight Center to develop addit

ively printed metal rocket engines and are the first university group to design, print, and test a 3D printed rocket engine. In addition to our printing success, SEDS@UCSD has won the DIYRockets competition's "Best Student Design" award for the most feasible rocket engine design which also has the most promising business plan for additive manufacturing. SEDS@UCSD and our members are attracting strong attention from the private industry and many prominent aerospace corporations such as SpaceX, Northrup Grumman, Boeing, Aerojet-Rocketdyne, and Blue Origin. SEDS UCSD just completed Static Fire 3 of Vesper, qualifying our engine and propulsion system for flight.
In under 6 weeks since Static Fire 2, the team redesigned the injector and chamber, and built and machined Moonshine 1D, the 4th iteration of our film-cooled LOX/IPA engine line.
In parallel, we brought up our flight-like regulated pressure system for the first time, validating all vehicle systems and GSE for safe COPV pressurization.
This test marks the transition to flight campaign prep, with Vesper targeting the FAR Dollar per Foot competition.
Next up: launch. 🚀

Bunker scenes from the first successful static fire test of Vesper, SEDS UCSD's latest liquid bipropellant rocket.

Despite a chamber burn-through on shutdown, Vesper produced higher than nominal thrust over the complete 8s burn duration, moving the vehicle closer towards flight in the coming months!
