"Research shows refugees are at a high risk for mental disorders, and some may inadvertently pass those symptoms on to their kids. But because of cultural stigmas and language challenges, they may not be fully addressed. This can delay engagement in the local economy, or worse, result in su***de. Some among San Diego’s Somali population — one of the largest in the country — say it’s that worst-case scenario that’s giving them concern."

To read more about this ongoing problem, read the below article that features Institute for Public Health's Climate and Environment Interest Group member Dr. Wael Al-Delaimy:

Members of San Diego's Somali community share their stories about losing loved ones to su***de in an effort to shed the taboo on psychological disorders.

See how the city of Philadelphia is dealing with the opioid epidemic today:
"Broadly, the city envisions a place where people would be allowed to bring in drugs and inject them using clean equipment. If someone overdosed, trained staff would respond to prevent death. The sites could save lives and money otherwise lost to hospitalizations and emergency response efforts. Advocates say the sites also could reduce neighborhood problems associated with addiction, like people injecting in public and discarding needles."

For more information, see the full article below.

Philadelphia officials gave the OK to establishing safe injection sites for drug users. But it's unclear where the sites would be located and who would fund and operate them.
