When designing and building an ADU, it is critical that a work order be submitted with the local utility company to get their guidance on where the new electrical panel needs to be located. The location of the electrical panel and the electrical utility is not governed by the city that you're building in, it is governed by the utility company. That means they are the ones that make the decision on where that equipment is located and hold a higher authority than the city in that regard. It usually takes 3 to 6 months to get plans from your local utility company once a work order is submitted for them to start that process. It is very important that the work order be submitted as soon as possible in the design process. In the city of San Diego, once plans are submitted for initial review, your project will be assigned an address a few weeks after submission. Once you have that address, you can submit a work order with SDGE.
