🌎 Where in the World is SCJ? 📍 Pend Oreille County, Washington

Located in the northeast corner of Washington, Pend Oreille County is known for its forests, rivers, mountains, and small communities stretching along the Idaho border.

SCJ’s work in Pend Oreille County has included:

🌲 Industrial & Manufacturing Feasibility – Evaluating opportunities for natural resource processing and rail-served manufacturing, including market and feedstock analysis, conceptual facility planning, infrastructure needs, permitting, and financial feasibility.

🏗️ Site Development Feasibility – Exploring development opportunities at Port-owned properties through site assessments, utility analysis, development alternatives, preliminary cost estimating, public engagement, and phased implementation planning.

We’re proud to support the Port of Pend Oreille as it explores new investment and economic development opportunities in the county!

📚🚌 Back to School Means Back to School Buses! 🚌📚

As students head back to the classroom, school buses are returning to our roads—and school zones, crosswalks, and sidewalks are getting busier, too! Give yourself a little extra travel time and keep an eye out for young pedestrians, cyclists, and buses making frequent stops.

Know when to STOP! School bus laws vary by state and roadway, so here’s a quick refresher from the states calls home:

🌲 Washington: Same-direction traffic must always stop for flashing red lights. On two-lane roads, both directions stop; on roads with 3+ lanes or divided roadways, oncoming traffic does not.

🥔 Idaho: On roads with 3 or fewer lanes, both directions stop. On roads with 4+ lanes, only traffic traveling in the same direction as the bus must stop.

🏔️ Montana: Stop at least 30 feet away. Both directions stop on two-lane roads; oncoming traffic separated by a raised median or physical barrier does not.

☀️ Colorado: Stop at least 20 feet away. Both directions stop unless separated by a raised or depressed physical median or barrier—painted lines don't count!

And don't forget about school zones! Watch for reduced speeds, flashing beacons, crosswalks, and crossing guards, and be prepared for kids walking or biking even outside marked school zones.

A little extra patience and attention can go a long way. Slow down, stay alert, and help everyone start the school year safely! 💛

A little sunshine outside SCJ Studio in Butte! 🌻

Summer in Seattle is better together. ☀️

Our office gathered at Magnuson Park for our annual SCJ summer picnic, complete with grilled steak, co****le, card games, paddleboarding, and plenty of time to catch up outside the office.

Each summer, we pick a spot around Seattle to bring the team together, enjoy the sunshine, and spend some quality time with the people who make SCJ such a great place to work. Thanks to everyone who came out!

Collaboration is even better when it comes with a road trip! 🚗💨

Gen and Aren (center and right) recently went over to Sandpoint to visit Aaron (left)—a great example of how our team stays connected across offices, disciplines, and miles.

At SCJ, being a tight-knit team means making time to connect, share ideas, and strengthen the relationships that make cross-team collaboration work. Different locations, one team. 💙

SCJ Landscape Architect and Arborist Colin Owen had some creative inspiration strike during a recent site visit at the Tumwater Golf Course.

While exploring the site, Colin came across the biggest artist’s conk mushroom (Ganoderma applanatum) he’s ever seen, growing on a fallen tree!

So, why the name “artist’s conk”? The mushroom’s white surface becomes a natural canvas when scratched, revealing darker marks underneath. Naturally, Colin had to put it to the test—with nothing more than a stick, a little creativity, and the SCJ logo. 🎨🍄

Just another reminder that you never know what interesting things you’ll discover out in the field!

Some of our staff put their core strength (and competitive spirit) to the test with their weekly plank challenge: plank until you break! 💪

A little shaking is all part of the challenge.

Who do you think held out the longest?

During a recent trip to Oregon for some parks planning-related community engagement, ’s Lauren Schubring and ’s Michael Gacetta encountered a local legend: Sasquatch! Well... an artistic representation of one, anyway. 😉

Our two planners got such a kick out of the sign that they couldn’t resist stopping for a photo, and the timing couldn’t have been better. Michael just happened to be sporting a Bigfoot shirt that day, making for an unexpectedly perfect photo op. Talk about dressing for the occasion!

You never know who—or what—you’ll encounter while out in the field. 🌲👣
