You will feel it before you see it. One morning in the next few weeks, the floor is cold, the windows are fogged from the inside, and somebody turns the heat on for the first time since spring.

That first startup is a test, and a system that has been sitting still for five months does not always pass it. A worn belt, a clogged filter, a capacitor that was already weak in April — none of those announce themselves in July.

The power goes out here for reasons everybody in Washington already knows. Wind, water, and trees — and that season starts sooner than the calendar suggests.

Three sounds worth paying attention to before summer ends:
Squealing usually means the fan belt is old and needs replacing. Hissing can be caused by a leaking compressor. A rattle at startup often points to loose hardware or a motor mount on its way out.
