This month’s spotlight is extra special. Not only is Cesar Peña one of the most recognizable faces in the private commercial lending industry, but September also marks his 12-year anniversary at Rubicon Mortgage Fund, LLC.
Cesar’s journey here started back in September 2013 as an intern. Fast forward to today, and he’s now our Sales Director, leading with the same drive and energy that’s carried him through every step of his career. Along the way, he’s crossed huge milestones, including $100M in originations, but what he’s most proud of these days is building and supporting a sales team that he wants to be the best in the industry.
Outside of the office, Cesar is never far from a good cup of black coffee or his aero road bike, clocking speeds of nearly 30 mph across the Golden Gate Bridge. When it comes to travel, he’s equally fascinated by the futuristic feel of Dubai and the time-machine vibe of Europe, but Manhattan still holds the top spot as his favorite city to wander and get lost in.
Some fun facts:
· Coffee enthusiast (but strictly black)
· Buffalo wings with ranch = the key to his heart
· Loves the beach but can’t swim
· Afraid of the dark
· Never without a polished look
When asked what he’d tell his younger self, Cesar said: “It’s okay to trust people when they’re trying to help you.”
The most impactful guidance he ever received, though, came years earlier, back when he was a waiter at Orinda Country Club. His mentor, Duane Fitch, told him: “Use this place as a stepping stone to get ahead in life.” That simple line stuck with Cesar and shaped the way he’s approached opportunities ever since.
Cesar credits much of his inspiration to being raised by his single mother in Bay Point and Concord. Today, he looks up to Rubicon’s CEO and close friend, Vance Hillstrom, as a role model.
The number 23 has always been Cesar’s favorite. These days, it carries extra meaning since both his wife and daughter were born on the 23rd.
Here’s to 12 years of Cesar’s hard work, energy, and impact at Rubicon.
