Do you see how God intends Deuteronomy 6 to work? When Joe Israel dies, his godly influence lives on in the lives of his son and grandson, whom he has taught to fear the Lord. Even as Joe Israel Sr. is dying, Joe Israel III is instilling the same love for God into his children that he learned from his father and ultimately from his grandfather. Joe Israel III is teaching Joe Israel IV what it means to be a godly man. Even after he dies, Joe Israel Sr. is still anchoring his family because he walked with God daily. That's how a man leads his family for one hundred years. As you read through the Bible, something begins to become very clear about God. God loves to pour out His favor on a man whose heart is fully set on following the Lord. I mean fully set. A guy like Joe Israel. Or a guy like you. God wants to work in your family just as He worked in Joe Israel's family. But you may be thinking, my family chain doesn't look like that. I'm the first guy in my family to come to Christ. I don't have a father and grandfather who have passed down a godly example. Then you get to be the first. You get to be the guy who puts a new link in your family chain.

Joe Israel III is sad when his grandfather dies, but he knows that one day he will be with him forever in heaven. Even when his grandfather is gone, he doesn't drift. And the reason he doesn't drift is that he has a father who is still anchored. And that's why when Joe Israel III becomes a father, he will be anchored on God as well. And because he is anchored, his children will not be part of a drifting family.

Time goes by and Joe Israel Jr. grows up and marries a very fine girl by the name of Rebekah Levi. It's not long before Joe Israel III comes along. Joe Israel III is a great kid who loves being with his dad. And he loves to go over to his grandfather's house. Joe Israel III is a pretty lucky kid. Not only does he have a great dad, he has a grandfather who is off the charts. As he gets older, he sees some of his friends become deeply wounded when their fathers divorce their mothers. Joe Israel III realizes how fortunate he is to have a father and a grandfather who would never divorce their wives. As Joe Israel III continues to mature, he realizes that the reason he is so blessed by a great father and a wonderful grandfather is that God is at the center of their lives. God is number one in the Israel family. And not only does he have a grandfather who is anchored on the God of Israel, he has a father who is anchored as well.

When Joe Israel follows God with everything that he has, his son sees this. His son knows that there is nothing more important to his father than loving God. And because his father loves God, his father loves his mother, his father loves Joe Israel Jr., and he loves Joe Jr.'s brothers and sisters. Joe Jr. has friends who don't have dads because their dads have moved not to the Philippines, but to the Philistines. Joe Jr. has friends whose dads constantly degrade them and put them down. As Joe Jr. looks around at his friends, he realizes that he has the best dad around. And as he gets older, it becomes more and more clear to him that the reason his father is such a great father is that God is at the center of his life.

Joe Israel is just a basic guy. He's a hard worker. He wants to provide for his wife and kids. Joe has a lot on his plate. When he falls into bed every night, he's tired. So how does a guy like Joe Israel lead his family for the next one hundred years? What God wants Joe Israel to do is to be a righteous man. He wants Joe Israel to be an obedient man. He wants Joe Israel to fear and revere Him. He doesn't want Joe Israel to live one way at the office and another at home. He doesn't want Joe Israel to act one way on the way to church and another at church. He wants Joe Israel to follow Him with his whole heart.

I've got some good news for you. God knows that you're stretched. He sees your work and your effort to lead and provide for your family. He is not a God who makes unreasonable demands on a man. His yoke is easy and His burden is light. God doesn't ask fathers to do something that they can't do. On the contrary, He is simply asking you to do something that you can do. Only most guys don't know that they can. The great thing about leading your family for the next one hundred years is that it doesn't take any more of your time than it does to lead your family today. Let me show you how this works. Let's take a hypothetical father who was part of Israel when Moses wrote Deuteronomy. He's a typical guy with a wife and kids. Let's call him Joe Israel.
