At Here We Grow Learning Academy in Winter Haven, guest reader Mike Huff, president of Pre-Con Construction of Florida, came aptly attired with hard hat and tape measure for his reading of “Dig, Dig, Digging” by Margaret Mayo. Much to the delight of the class he also gave each student a bright yellow hard hat to wear. After the reading Huff also explained the importance of safety and math. When he passed around his measuring tape students understood the relevance immediately! Bulldozers also filled the room after students colored and assembled their own unique version.

The book, which describes various construction and rescue vehicles, was this year’s selection for Celebrate Literacy, Florida! observed by preschools throughout the state. Each year the event raises awareness about the importance of reading and seeks to inspire Florida’s students and families to make reading a part of their daily routine.
