Growth Requires More Than New Houses and New Businesses.

Lady Lake, Florida is investing in what often goes unnoticed: the infrastructure needed to support future growth.

The town has received $1 million in state funding to help expand its Water Reclamation Facility. The project will increase treatment capacity to 3 million gallons per day, add advanced wastewater treatment, and expand reclaimed-water capabilities.

Construction isn't expected to begin until 2027, but the planning is happening now.

That's an important lesson for any growing community:

You can't wait for infrastructure to become a problem before you start investing in it.

Water, wastewater, energy and other essential systems may not get the attention that new development does—but they're what make that development possible in the first place.

How does a dewatering tube actually work?

The process is surprisingly straightforward:

💧 1. Pump – Sludge is pumped from a pond or lagoon, with polymer added to condition the material.

🔄 2. Condition – The mixture passes through a series of curves that promote flocculation, creating larger, more stable particles.

🧺 3. Dewater – The conditioned slurry enters the geotextile tube. Solids are retained while water passes through the fabric.

♻️ 4. Consolidate – As the material dewaters, the remaining solids form a dry cake that can be transported or managed on-site.

The result? Less sludge volume, lower transportation and disposal costs, and a simpler approach to solids management.

What if wastewater could become an energy source?

Fond du Lac, Wisconsin is investing $32 million to upgrade its wastewater treatment facility—and the project is doing much more than modernizing an aging plant.

The upgrades will include a biosolids dryer and a system that converts biogas from human waste into renewable natural gas that can be injected directly into the pipeline.

Even the remaining biosolids will be processed into fertilizer pellets rather than being sent to a landfill when they can't be applied to farmland.

Perhaps the bigger lesson is this:

Waste isn't always the end of the process. Sometimes, it's the beginning of the next one.

As communities look for more sustainable—and economically useful—ways to manage resources, projects like this show how infrastructure can turn an environmental challenge into an opportunity.

What if you could conserve water without changing the way your reservoir operates?

Evaporation can represent a significant source of water loss—particularly in dry, arid and resource-sensitive areas.

IEC’s floating evaporation mitigation covers are designed to reduce that loss by blocking sunlight and wind across the water’s surface. At the same time, the floating system adapts to changing water levels and can help protect water quality by limiting algae growth and debris.
