The Minneapolis American Indian Center has reached completion after enduring a year-long renovation!
The grand reopening welcomed hundreds of Minneapolis Indigenous community members and supporters back into the space, which highlights the community's history and accomplishments. The newly redesigned center hosts an art gallery, gift shop, and fitness center. The space is also equipped with multiple large conference rooms accompanied by office spaces. Areas that were already at the center pre-renovation include Gatherings Cafe, now equipped with a new state-of-the-art commercial kitchen. The cafe will serve both patrons at the center and provide catering services to the community. The existing programs have received fresh new spaces to further benefit the community, including a Boys and Girls Club and an indoor gymnasium for recreational sports leagues, powwows, and other competitive events.
The renovations added 22,000 square feet, bringing the total building size to about 66,000 square feet. The design, championed by Sam Olbekson of Full Circle Indigenous Planning + Design and Cuningham, focused on keeping the character and heritage of the building intact. Using new technology, the 'Keep To***co Sacred' mural previously painted on the side of the building was scanned and printed to scale. It is now housed in the Frances Fairbanks Memorial Gymnasium!
The center renovation breathes new life into the Minneapolis Indigenous community, benefiting people for many years to come. Loeffler Construction is proud, honored, and grateful to have been a part of this transformational project.
