Science Systems and Applications, Inc (SSAI) congratulates our Senior Research Scientist, David Mocko, on being selected as an author for the U.S. Drought Monitor! His work will help inform the nation’s weekly drought map using key indicators such as soil moisture, precipitation, groundwater, vegetation, streamflow, and snow.

The U.S. Drought Monitor is produced jointly by the National Drought Mitigation Center (NDMC) at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), and for the first time - National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). It uses a convergence of evidence that includes weather and climate data, on-the-ground observations, satellite-informed indicators used across federal agencies, and input and recommendations from state-level scientists.

During National Wildfire Awareness Month, Science Systems and Applications, Inc (SSAI) is proud to support NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration's Fire Information for Resource Management System (FIRMS), a critical resource that helps people around the world monitor wildfire activity in near real-time.

During major wildfire events, FIRMS frequently appears among the top most visited NASA webpages and apps. For example, during a series of wildfires occurring in many parts of Europe, Canada, and the Western US in August 2025, 3,448 users visited FIRMS in one 30-minute period (National Aeronautics and Space Administration [NASA], n.d.). This underscores how heavily people rely on trusted wildfire information when it matters most.

Last week, SSAI attended the Spaceflight Human Optimization & Performance Summit (SHOP 26) at NASA Johnson Space Center. https://hubs.la/Q04fFQnM0

At SSAI, we are committed to leveraging our decades of expertise supporting Earth science, planetary science, lunar environments, remote sensing, and complex data integration, and helping address the emerging challenges of human health and performance in deep space.

As missions extend to the Moon, Mars, and beyond, astronaut health will increasingly be shaped by environmental factors such as radiation exposure, regolith interactions, habitat conditions, and operational constraints. The same scientific expertise used to analyze planetary and lunar environments can help inform next-generation solutions for autonomous health monitoring, environmental risk assessment, and AI-enabled clinical decision support.

SSAI will help to bridge these domains by applying our heritage in scientific data systems, environmental analytics, and operational innovation to support the future of sustained human exploration.
