MEDevice Boston opens at 10 a.m. Four brands from the Lesjöfors network are sharing one booth: John Evans' Sons, Plymouth Spring, Tollman Spring, and Lesjöfors.

Between us: constant force, spiral torsion, power, compression, extension, torsion, micro springs, wire forms, and stampings.

That is a battery contact stamping next to a 1998 dime, and the dime is winning on size by a comfortable margin. 🔋

John Evans' Sons manufactures precision metal stampings and flat springs in Lansdale, Pennsylvania, for battery contacts and other small electrical components. 🏭

The thing about parts this size is that the tolerance does not get smaller with the part. A few thousandths off on a bracket is nothing. A few thousandths off here and it does not make contact at all.

Which means everything gets decided in the tooling, long before the first part drops.
Making one is a good afternoon. Making four hundred thousand that are identical is the job.

176 years in, we are still measuring in thousandths.

Here's a question most people never think about: when an aircraft component moves, how do you make sure it pushes back with exactly the same force every single time?

Why use a constant force spring instead of a conventional coil?

Here is the mechanical reason that matters.

An extension spring builds force as it stretches. In a window balance, that means the sash fights you at the bottom of its travel and drifts at the top. The user experiences that as a window that never quite behaves.

A constant force spring delivers essentially the same force throughout its extension. The sash weighs the same to the operator at two inches as it does at fully open, because the counterbalance does not change with position.

That single property is why the application exists the way it does.
