🥶 MICHIGAN WINTER REALITY CHECK: Can a heat pump really keep your home warm?

Yes: when it’s the right cold-climate model, properly sized, and matched to the home. But honest guidance matters: as outdoor temperatures drop, a heat pump’s heating capacity and efficiency can change. That doesn’t automatically make it a bad choice.

A hybrid, or dual-fuel, system: heat pump plus furnace backup: may make sense when:
✔️ You want efficient electric heating during milder weather
✔️ Your home has propane and you want to save money and use less propane
✔️ Your home has challenging insulation, ductwork, or electrical limitations
✔️ You want flexibility instead of relying on one heat source

Before heating season, we can evaluate your equipment, ductwork, insulation, fuel options, and repair-versus-replacement needs: not just push the biggest system. If your current furnace or heat pump can be safely repaired, we’ll tell you.

Considering a new system or replacement? Call (810) 664-8576 to schedule your FREE in-home estimate. Need service or a repair? Give our office a call to book it.

🚨 Before the first cold snap, take a moment to think about your furnace’s heat exchanger.

The heat exchanger is the metal barrier that separates combustion gases: including carbon monoxide: from the air circulated through your home. After thousands of heating cycles, metal fatigue and restricted airflow can contribute to cracks.

Warning signs may include:
✔️ A yellow or flickering burner flame
✔️ Soot around the burner or furnace
✔️ A chemical or burning odor when the blower starts
✔️ Repeated shutdowns, popping, or rattling noises
✔️ Headaches or dizziness that improve when you leave the home

Carbon monoxide is colorless and odorless. If you suspect a problem, shut the furnace off and call a professional. If your CO alarm sounds or anyone feels seriously ill, leave the home and call 911.

At Michigan Heating, Cooling & Plumbing, our third-generation, family-owned team uses combustion analysis and documented diagnostics to provide honest answers: no scare tactics and no pressure to replace equipment unless a confirmed crack makes replacement the safe standard. If replacement is needed, we’ll help you understand efficient options.

Before you turn on your furnace this fall, take a few minutes to protect your household from carbon monoxide (CO): an odorless, invisible danger.

✔️ Install CO alarms near sleeping areas and on every level of your home.
✔️ Test each alarm and replace batteries as needed.
✔️ If an alarm sounds, leave immediately and call 911 from outside. Never ignore it or re-enter until authorities say it’s safe.
✔️ Have your furnace and venting professionally inspected before the heating season.
✔️ Keep furnace vents, flues, and fresh-air intakes clear of snow, leaves, debris, and other obstructions.
✔️ Never use an oven, stove, grill, or portable fuel-burning heater to heat your home.
✔️ Watch for possible CO symptoms, including headache, dizziness, nausea, weakness, confusion, or unusual fatigue.

If you have concerns about your furnace, chimney, or venting, arrange an urgent professional evaluation. Don’t attempt gas or combustion-related work yourself.
