In the oil and gas industry, fuel is either invisible or it represents the main problem at a site.

If it succeeds, no one mentions it; but if it fails, the rig is lost, the crew have to stand there, and the cost of that hour is much greater than the cost of the fuel.

It is difficult due to the conditions, since the roads at the outstations have never been driven by most of the suppliers. Consumption varies depending on the stage of the work. The compliance requirements never accommodate anyone's schedule.

Hurricane season does not give much notice. The window between "watch the forecast" and "the power is out" can close in a single afternoon.

The operations that come through it best are usually the ones that made three decisions before the storm was named.

1. Top off before the rush. Once a track turns toward the coast, terminals get busy, and roads get slow. Tanks that are already full are the ones that stay full. If you run a keep-full agreement or tank monitoring, this is the week to confirm your levels and your delivery schedule.

2. Plan for the generator, not just the fleet. Backup power is only as good as the fuel behind it. Hospitals, water systems, cold storage, data rooms, and municipal facilities all run on a tank someone has to refill on day three. Know who is filling yours and how they will reach you.

3. Know your after-hours contact. Not the general line. The person who answers at 2 a.m.

Texas deals with hurricanes on the Gulf Coast, extreme heat, and winter storms, and each one can put pressure on fuel supply. We have been doing this since 1942, and the pattern holds every time: the customers who call us in June have a much easier September than the ones who call us during the storm.
