Today is the last day of the Little Black Dress Initiative. This week I wore the same black outfit every day to shed light on the staggering childhood literacy statistics in our community and to help raise funds to dramatically improve these statistics. Every dollar raised this week will go toward putting books in the hands of the students in our community through JLLC’s “A Book of My Own Initiative.”

When only 1 in 300 low-income students own a book of their own and 26% of our children are living in poverty, something that seems so simple, like ensuring that a child has access to books at home, can make all the difference in the world. The Junior League of Las Cruces will use the funds raised during the Little Black Dress Initiative to fund our “A Book of My Own Initiative,” which works to change these statistics by ensuring every child, no matter their socioeconomic status, has access to books of their own at home. This program relies on a simple yet fundamental truth: if you allow children choice and access, they will be more engaged.

“We have partnered with the Junior League of Las Cruces for two years now. Our main goal and objective is to encourage the love of reading by bringing books into the hands of our Central Elementary students. WOW! Students across our grade levels were so excited to get their books. Even when we have extra barriers put upon us with this pandemic, thanks to Junior League, we still manage to partner up for the love of reading.” – Sabina Aguilar, Principle of Central Elementary.

New Mexico consistently ranks 50th in economic well-being and 50th in education. Those two things go hand-in-hand. Only 1 in 300 low-income children own their own book, and 26% of New Mexico’s children live in poverty. As a result, 76% of 4th graders in New Mexico are not proficient in reading. While these numbers are staggering, together we can make a difference by putting books in the hands of every child.

JLLC’s “A Book of My Own Initiative” has already provided books to every student at two local elementary schools, and with your help, JLLC can reach its goal of providing books to every single student in Doña Ana County. It is Day 1 of the Little Black Dress Initiative and International Women’s Day!

In addition to raising awareness, we will also be raising funds to support the Junior League of Las Cruces’ (JLLC) “A Book of My Own Initiative,” which works to combat these statistics by using the funds raised to purchase books for students at local elementary schools. In the last year, JLLC’s A Book of My Own Initiative has given out over 775 books, providing a book of their own to every single student at Central Elementary and Doña Ana Elementary Schools in Las Cruces.

Join us for our 2nd general meeting of the semester this coming Tuesday at 6 pm! We will be meeting in Thomas and Brown, room 104. Discussion topics include our bake sale on Thursday (YAY!!) and upcoming Engineers Week events. We hope to see everyone there, snacks will be provided!

Come on out to the fall festival tonight for a good time! WiSTEM will have a table with baked goods for sale, stop by and say hi! Set up begins at 5:30, feel free to drop off your baked goods and stay for a while to help us sell them!

We have so many wonderful role models in Las Cruces for our boys and girls! LCPS students aspire when exposed to their future possibilities and when they understand the “why” for their education.
