Serial Thief or Thieves Targeting Commercial HVAC Systems

Las Cruces police believe someone, a pair or possibly a group of serial thieves have been targeting centralized rooftop HVAC systems at large commercial buildings since January and, so far, the total losses have surpassed $1.5 million.

The thefts have been reported at multiple commercial and residential structures throughout Las Cruces since January 2025. Since April, the number of such thefts has only increased.

The suspect – or suspects – are likely targeting the heating, ventilation and air conditioning units for their valuable components, like copper and aluminum, that can easily be recycled or scrapped for cash.

Because of the risk and complexity of the thefts – climbing on roofs of large commercial buildings and removing bulky material – police believe they are likely being committed by more than one person and possibly by a small group of perpetrators.

The reported thefts have primarily been committed during overnight hours. Damage estimates have ranged from $20,000 per occurrence to well north of $200,000.

Though HVAC systems in large commercial buildings have primarily been targeted, copper and aluminum have also been stolen from electrical panels, ground-based air conditioning units and cell phone towers.

Las Cruces police urge the public, and primarily owners and managers of large commercial buildings, to remain vigilant and evaluate their property for space, roof access, lighting and security needs.

Called at 9:17 am, arrived at 9:51am. Joel was super professional. After some troubleshooting, diagnosed the problem as a failed motor on my Air Conditioner. Stated he had a replacement motor with him. Job was completed at 11:15am. Joel didn't try to upsell me on parts I didn't need. Great response time, great service, great company.
