Automate the most tedious part of microgrid design - getting load information from the utility.

With each passing news cycle, microgrids and distributed energy technologies are becoming a more and more attractive solution for organizations seeking resiliency and carbon emission reduction. However, knowing where the best opportunities for microgrids are and hiring engineers to analyze projects can be expensive and time consuming - without guaranteeing any results.

To speed up the design process, and get rid of one of the most tedious yet important parts of the design process, Xendee has integrated with UtilityAPI, a provider of interval load and general utility data for metered sites. This allows engineers to quickly and precisely import energy load data in the correct format directly from the utility. This helps Xendee create a more optimal design solution by using the actual historical use data from the building and helps account for the seasonal, hourly, and specific usage patterns of the facility.

In this Utility Dive article, we cover the ways microgrids & DERs, particularly those that involve hydrogen, can be optimized to overcome the duck curve - all while reducing costs & delivering higher returns for stakeholders.

How can towns cost effectively leverage community microgrids to meet their renewable energy targets while building greater long-term resiliency in the face of increasingly severe weather? Through the Clean Energy and Resiliency (CLEAR) Program, which is supported by the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center, we partnered with RAND Corporation, Converge Strategies, LLC, & Ridgeline Energy Analytics to answer this question for the town of West Tisbury in Massachusetts. West Tisbury’s goals are to reach 100% renewable energy by 2040 & to use solar energy & batteries to provide back-up power to town buildings.

The project utilized Xendee’s energy resilience analysis platform to outline how the town can strengthen its energy infrastructure against extreme weather & grid interruptions to ensure that its lifeline facilities & emergency services are positioned to serve its community when they are most in need. In addition to providing greater resiliency, the energy systems for the town library, a fire station & the Public Service Building would result in net lifetime savings, compared to the current situation, of: 20%, 67% & 42%, respectively. Congrats, San Diego Gas & Electric on moving forward with four microgrid projects, & Gridscape Solutions & City of San Diego, on moving forward with eight microgrid projects in San Diego! Shell New Energies US will own & operate the eight microgrids on behalf of the city for 25 years. In total, the eight microgrids will provide 930 kW of solar, 2,175 MWh of battery storage & multiple electric vehicle charging stations. The four SDG&E microgrid projects will dispatch clean energy to the grid when needed and keep critical facilities like schools and fire stations powered during emergencies. https://t.co/BfOON6RxmI

Funded by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, the toolkit enables airports to implement microgrids to obtain greater control over the energy they need & use; reallocate funds toward critical functions; & serve as key community assets during natural disasters.
