This week is ! 🐝

Without pollinators, the human race and all of Earth's ecosystems would NOT survive. Over 80% of the world's flowering plants require a pollinator to reproduce.

Native plants are vital to the existence of all pollinators. Not only do they provide nectar, they are also drought-tolerant and can survive on much less water than other plants.

Our native plant featured today is the Penstemon species. 🌸

Penstemon are a very common wildflower native to desert mountains in Nevada, California, Utah, Arizona and Idaho. Palmer’s Penstemon thrives in desert washes and sagebrush-covered slopes. It is a drought-tolerant perennial plant, preferring well-draining, drier soils. It grows in washes, roadsides, canyon floors, and found in creosote bush scrub, and juniper woodlands. The tubular flowers feature lines leading to the back of the flower known as nectar guides, like runway lights advertising to bees. Penstemon provides pollen and nectar at a time when resources are dwindling at the end of spring. Their long bloom time between late spring and mid-summer is vital when other plants are just beginning to bloom.

You can help the pollinators that are vital to our existence, by planting these desert-friendly native plants.

The Reno Spaghetti Bowl project is a 3-year highway reconstruction that will support the growing population of Washoe County, reduce traffic congestion, and improve safety and air quality.

We were selected to provide the landscaping and irrigation on this project, including planting, seeding, rock walls, cable rails, and more... and are excited to share the progress along the way.

Pollinator Highlight: Sulphur Bukweat 🌼

Sulphur Buckwheat (Eriogonum umbellatum) is a species of wild buckwheat and is native to western North America from California to Colorado to central Canada, where it is abundant and found in many habitats, including the sagebrush steppe and alpine areas.

Liking well-drained soil—even gravel and sand—it takes heat, cold and places that barely support plant life. It is normally found at about 4,000’ in sage scrub.

Sulphur Buckwheat attracts bees, hover flies and butterflies, and is eaten by various types of mammals, and is also a larval host and nectar source for lupine blue butterfly.
