The unauthorized access of the company’s systems occurred between mid-May and July of this year. The intrusion was discovered on July 29th and Equifax immediately took steps to stop the intrusion. According to the Equifax press release, the perpetrators of the breach gained access to names, Social Security numbers, birth dates, addresses, and, in some instances, driver’s license numbers. Equifax has setup a website, www.equifaxsecurity2017.com, to help consumers determine if their information has been potentially compromised and to sign up for credit file monitoring and identity theft protection. That website also has additional information about the security breach and contact information for Equifax Inc. I urge you to visit the website, find out if you were potentially impacted, and sign up for their free services even if you already have a similar service.
