Jaime Alvarez, preservation architect with Lord Aeck Sargent, said his firm and his client were happy with the recently brightened look of the Travis County Probate Courts building, which was cleaned by United Restoration + Preservation. "PROSOCO is our go-to for building cleaning products," he says.

For nearly a decade, the old federal courthouse building in downtown Austin, Texas, accumulated carbon, biological stains, and general grime. By the time Travis County acquired it in 2016 to convert it into a new use, the stains needed professional care. Lord Aeck Sargent specified three specialized cleaning solutions for the combination of stains and substrates (limestone and granite): ReKlaim Cleaner, Limestone & Masonry Afterwash, and EK Restoration Cleaner.

How do you know when efflorescence indicates a larger problem versus when it's going to go away on its own (new building bloom)? Here's what Ken Rathbun, our Director of Product Strategy for cleaners and protective treatments, says:

For every 1 inch of thickness of your masonry wall, wait one month for the building to achieve equilibrium -- which is when the stain will likely go away naturally. Don't start the clock until after the building is finished and HVAC systems are turned on.

Winter may seem far away, but Saltguard season is officially here. The ideal time to apply Saltguard to protect your surfaces (horizontal and vertical!) from the damaging effects of winter is late summer to early fall.

Want to know if your concrete is ready for an application? Here's a really simple trick to find out: Pour a little water over the surface. If the water beads up or puddles on the surface, the concrete has likely already been treated at some point. If it wets out and soaks into the surface, then the surface is ready for an application of Saltguard, Saltguard WB or Saltguard VOC. Apply it before winter hits!

Tim Manning (aka Tennessee Tim) says he only uses PROSOCO water repellents, but that wasn't always the case. "We did a job seven years ago with a competitor's product the supply house had recommended. Unfortunately, it cost me a lot of money and labor in the end. It took 5 coats to what 1 coat of PROSOCO normally takes. Since then, only PROSOCO is used on my projects!" We love to hear it, Tim! ❤️

Your homework is done! (For anti-graffiti treatments.) We now have an ICC-ES ESL Report for all six of our Blok-Guard treatments, as well as SafStrip and Graffiti Remover. This nationally recognized, third-party-verified compliance saves time for everyone from architects and consultants to building officials, developers, contractors and owners, and PROSOCO is the first manufacturer to achieve a listing of this type.

To run a blower door test before or after drywall is installed.... is that the question? It's a complicated one, according to Chris Tobias, our Building Envelope Technical Specialist. He sees blower door tests performed many times *after* drywall is installed, which you could say he has some strong opinions about. He wrote about why it's really important WHEN you run a blower door test here:
