Had a good conversation about pasture management with a client the other day. Made me think an article like this might be beneficial for some. Hope it helps.

Pasture management can be a lot of work- here's how to break down your planning by the season.

One of the weirdest ways I've heard of to lose a shoe.

When Fleur de Lis stumbled on landing from the C element of the triple combination in the CCI** show jumping at the Jersey Fresh International (N.J.) on May 10, Tamie Smith wasn’t sure what happened.

In the past couple of weeks we've had lots of rain, warmer temperatures and now it looks be pretty sunny. Watch out for lush, green grass to start growing soon! If you have any laminitis concerns about your horse this coming spring, be sure to give Mike a call!

We all know that melting snow and rain means lots of mud. With all that mud will come lost shoes! Please let Mike know as soon as you notice a shoe is missing. He'll do his very best to get the shoe back on as quickly as possible!

Say hello to the ancient straw horse sandals, known as umugatsu, of Japan, which appear, at first glance in these antique photos by T. Enemi, to have been the EasyBoots of their day. Or were they? What hoofcare principle is at work here? Is it a horseshoe or something else? Why would anyone choose t…

Here is a recent testimonial from one of our clients with multiple horses. Thanks, Liz! If you'd like to provide a testimonial, just reply to this post. We'll likely feature it on www.mikanforge.com!

"I've been involved with horses most of my life. I am an active dressage show rider with four horses who also likes to dabble in eventing. Mike Whisler has been my farrier for over four years now and I'm extremely happy with the quality of his work and the care he gives my horses. The saying, "no hoof no horse," is truer than words can describe. In the last four years I've had horses that barely need trimming and horses that require inventive fixes. Mike has been willing and able to help any horse I've had. He cares about giving his clients his absolute best work and it shows. My horses are kept at home and we don't have the traditional cross-tie or grooming stall set up. His willingness to work with every scenario I've had pop up is beyond measure. He always takes the time to explain what he's doing and why to anyone who asks. I tend to have a very crazy schedule but Mike is always willing to work around last minute issues that have cropped up. He is also extremely conscientious about punctuality, those rare occasions that he is running behind he always lets me know. I've known many farriers in my 24 years of horses and it can be exceptionally hard to find a good, trustworthy farrier. In my opinion Mike is a fantastic farrier and I'm thankful to have him working with me and my horses."

All this crazy weather has led to lots of pulled shoes. Although it often can't be prevented, being careful not to turn horses out in extremely muddy pastures and using bell boots can help minimize pulled shoes!
