Stained glass wasn't originally created just for its beauty. For centuries, builders used colored glass to soften harsh sunlight, reduce glare, and fill large spaces with natural light long before modern lighting and climate control existed.

Today, these windows stand as remarkable works of art and craftsmanship. At Union Avenue Christian Church, one of the interior stained glass installations was designed by the renowned local artisans at Emil Frei and illuminated from behind to create a stunning visual centerpiece. As restoration work continues, R.G. Ross is proud to partner with Jacksonville Stained Glass to preserve and restore these historic features, helping ensure their beauty, craftsmanship, and history endure for generations to come.

FUN FACT FRIDAY 💡🧱

In 1917, Thomas Edison patented a system to build entire concrete homes in a single pour. Using reusable steel molds, builders could cast walls, roofs, and stairs all at once.

The idea was to create affordable, fireproof housing during a national shortage. While the molds were expensive and limited widespread use, several homes were built in New Jersey and Gary, Indiana. Many of these structures are still standing over 100 years later!
