5G is changing what we ask of the RF power amplifier.
Wider bands, denser networks, and higher data rates all land on the PA. It needs to deliver more power, stay linear across broader bandwidths, and do it efficiently, all in a smaller footprint.
That’s driving real innovation in the amplifier space. Modern designs increasingly use GaN and GaAs PHEMT technology, with noise figures as low as 0.7 dB and saturated output power up to 200 W.
For engineers, the takeaway is that amplifier selection is a system-level decision. Gain, linearity, efficiency, thermal management, and frequency coverage (sub-6 GHz through mmWave) all need to line up with your application, whether that’s prototyping, test, or deployment.
