When Eastern Kentucky University approached Brown + Kubican this summer with concerns about spalling concrete at Clay Hall, our team quickly got to work.

The exposed concrete ribbing is a defining feature of Clay Hall’s brutalist architecture, making it especially important to address the deterioration while preserving the character of the building. BK provided a fast-turnaround emergency assessment and repair approach, working with Midwest Maintenance Inc. to safely remove loose concrete spalls and allow continued use of the facility while a more permanent repair solution is developed.

This summer, we had the opportunity to welcome a great group of interns to BK across our Lexington, Louisville, and Chattanooga offices. From jumping into real projects and learning from our team to bringing fresh ideas, energy, and new perspectives to the office, they’ve made a meaningful impact on our team.

We’re grateful for all the hard work, curiosity, and enthusiasm they’ve brought to BK. Ashley, Ben, Billy, Chris, Mary, Mason, Sam, Lillie, Ryan, Owen, and Michael, thank you for being part of the team this summer!

Investing in our interns means investing in the future of BK, and we’re proud to be part of their journey as they grow into the next generation of engineers.

Best of luck with the upcoming school year!

✨Project Highlight: Elizabethtown Community & Technical College On-Site Training Center

This week we're looking back at the ECTC On-Site Training Center in Glendale, Kentucky. Completed in 2024, the 43,937 square foot facility earned LEED Gold Certification and features high-bay training spaces, classrooms, offices, and collaborative learning areas that prepares skilled workers needed for the BlueOval SK battery manufacturing facility.

The structure consists of a steel framed structure with braced frames as the lateral load resisting system for wind and seismic loads. Steel joists and beams support the metal roof deck, and beams are supported on steel columns founded on shallow spread footings. Architecturally exposed steel frames and trusses in the main entry corridor put the structural system on display and create a striking entrance.

Congratulations to UofL Health on receiving Louisville Business First's Commercial Real Estate Project of the Year award for the new West Tower!

Brown + Kubican is proud to have provided structural engineering services for this award-winning facility. We are honored to have partnered with JRA Architects and the entire project team to help deliver a project that expands access to care and supports the growing healthcare needs of the Louisville community.

Jason Smith, UofL Health’s CEO, says “This is actually one of the newest, most cutting-edge facilities we have in the city. It’s great, because in [the hybrid ORs in particular] you can do stuff for neurosurgery, like aneurysms and strokes. You can also do stuff around cancer care and isolating and localizing the tumors when you’re doing surgery. We can do things with orthopedics, vascular surgery, heart — you name it.”

UofL Health's new $186 million West Tower opened in December 2025, adding 98 beds and six operating rooms to the Louisville hospital.

Project Spotlight: WKU Hilltopper Field House & Press Box Renovation

Brown + Kubican is proud to have provided structural engineering services for the new Hilltopper Field House and Press Box Renovation at Western Kentucky University.

This transformative, approximately $50.0 M athletic facilities project includes a new state-of-the-art field house and press box designed to enhance the student-athlete, media, and fan experience.

The indoor field house provides year-round practice space for football while also supporting baseball operations, E-sports, and forensics programs. Adjacent structural steel-framed spaces accommodate training, locker, and support facilities. The project's unique design incorporates two structurally independent building systems separated by a continuous expansion joint.

The new press box elevates the game-day experience with television and radio broadcast booths, coaches' boxes, premium spectator seating, game operations space, and a new President's Suite, all carefully engineered within the constraints of the existing stadium structure that added significant function square footage without diminishing the current spaces.

We are honored to have partnered with K Norman Berry Associates Architects to deliver a facility that supports excellence both on and off the field for generations of Hilltoppers to come.
