ICE MAY BE COMING!!
When ice gets in your outdoor unit it could cause it to freeze and not function resulting in no heat. Just a quick 30 min project that will prevent what happened to me a few years ago during an ice storm. I ran to Lowe’s this morning and spent $50 on some 2x4’s and a sheet of plastic to build a temporary cover. I included the before and after pics of what I did. Hopefully this will help anyone planning to stay in their home have an idea of what will keep the heat on (as long as you have power). The idea is to cover it without setting anything directly on the unit itself because moving air is what the unit requires to function. DO NOT SET ANYTHING RIGHT ON THE UNIT (in case you missed the last sentence). I should also say that this doesn’t work if your unit is already froze - it’s 100% preventative measures. I hope this life hack helps anyone who wants to be prepared and keep families safe.
Maybe you’re not capable of building this or don’t have the money or supplies and want to do something. The cover doesn’t have to be pretty, just needs to do its job to shed the ice off the fan and coils inside. If you have 2 trash cans you could make a makeshift cover to get you through. Maybe set them on each side of the unit and lay something over the trash cans to cover the unit.
Someone jokingly said earlier “I rent, I will just call the landlord.” The landlord may deal with it promptly but HVAC companies are going to be overwhelmed with work during this inclement weather.
