Horse Care 101: How to Check Your Horse’s Heart Rate ❤️🐴
A healthy adult horse’s resting heart rate is typically 24–44 beats per minute.
To check it:
🐴 Place your fingers under the jaw or use a stethoscope just behind the left elbow.
⏱️ Count the beats for 15 seconds and multiply by 4.
A heart rate that’s higher than normal at rest can be an early sign of pain, stress, illness, or colic. Knowing your horse’s normal baseline makes it easier to recognize when something isn’t right.
➡️ When in doubt, always contact your veterinarian.
