Knowing the difference between an outlook, a watch, and a warning can help you know when it’s time to prepare and when it’s time to act. When severe weather is mentioned in an outlook several days ahead, that’s the time to start paying attention, review your safety plans, and stay updated on the forecast. When a watch is issued, conditions are favorable for severe weather, so be ready to take action and know where you will go if a warning is issued. A warning means severe weather is occurring or imminent. That’s the time to act immediately and move to your safe place.
Remember: outlook means prepare, watch means be ready, and warning means take action.

One of the greatest severe weather concerns in our region are tornadoes occurring after dark. Since 1995, nighttime tornadoes have been responsible for 119 of the 131 tornado fatalities in our region, that’s 91 percent. Darkness makes tornadoes particularly dangerous because you may not be able to see the storm approaching, and overnight storms can occur while you’re sleeping. As the days become shorter during the fall, this becomes even more important. Before you go to bed on a night when severe weather is possible, make sure you are aware of any severe weather threats and have a reliable warning method loud enough to wake you and everyone in your home.

How will you know when severe weather is headed your way? Don’t depend on just one source. Wireless Emergency Alerts on your cell phone can provide critical warnings without downloading an app, but they should be just one part of your warning plan. Weather apps, local TV and radio media, NOAA Weather Radio, and trusted social media sources can provide additional information as weather conditions change. NOAA Weather Radio is especially useful overnight because it can automatically alert you while you’re sleeping. Have at least two reliable ways to receive warnings, keep your phone charged, and never rely solely on outdoor warning sirens.

Fall Severe Weather Safety Awareness Week is Sept 28th through October 2nd; MCSA and the National Weather Service in Paducah are reminding everyone that severe weather isn’t just a springtime threat. As we transition from summer into fall, stronger weather systems can create an environment favorable for severe thunderstorms and tornadoes across our region. Historically, our area has experienced numerous significant severe weather events during October and November. This week, we’ll be sharing information to help you better understand our fall severe weather threat and, most importantly, what you can do to stay safe. Take some time this week to learn more via the news headlines link at the top of the webpage at www.weather.gov/pah and make sure you’re ready before severe weather strikes.

The anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks on America is solemn, one that immediately brings to memory the fear, uncertainty, and grief of that tragic day. It goes without saying that we will always pay tribute to the fearless first responders, many of whom raced head-first into danger, never to return, the families whose lives were changed forever, and the everyday people on the ground who committed themselves to helping whoever they could, however they could.

Following those dark hours, as many will recall, our Nation sprang to her feet; an astonishingly uniting time after bleakness the likes of which we'd never witnessed. Camaraderie and support were shown nationwide - and globally - through words, prayers, and deeds; many of these were well documented, and many happened away from cameras or crowds.

One of those quiet moments took place at sea. The below photo is the German ship Lutjens, her crew manning the rails in dress uniforms, steaming with two US Navy destroyers (WINSTON CHURCHILL and GONZALEZ) immediately after the attacks. The sign - in English - reads "We Stand by You" as the German sailors show support to the American sailors on board across the way.

MCSA President Brian Fort, who, seven years later would command the USS Gonzalez, had this to say about that important time of solidarity. "[This is] also a time to reflect on where we were on 9/12 and in the immediate days which followed – we were the most united I’ve ever seen our country, indeed our world, in my lifetime."

As we remember that terrible day and the losses we incurred as families, communities, and as a nation, let us also keep in mind the unity and strong leadership that followed. "This is also a time to reflect on leadership over the past two decades," Fort continued. "Great leaders unite, particularly during a crisis. The days following 9/11/01 were a coming together of the world."

Let us all use this somber day to remember that unity, put it back into daily practice, and recognize the importance of rich, capable leadership when we find it. We are stronger together.

MCSA in Paducah was honored to have the opportunity to raise funds for Miss Charly Steinbrink’s ongoing care and expenses.

Before an automobile accident, Charly spent five years working for a subcontractor supporting the DUF6 laundry service.

All in all, $10,000 was raised by MCSA personnel and delivered directly to her mother, Kim.

We wish Charly the best, and are so glad we could lend a helpful hand in her road to recovery. ❤️

MCSA in Portsmouth, OH, was proud to contribute to the St. Elizabeth No. 6 Order of the Eastern Star in support of their annual golf scramble, with proceeds benefitting higher-education scholarships for our youth and vital community charity initiatives across Ohio.

MCSA believes we work better, together, and we’re grateful for the opportunity to support strong community initiatives like these.

MCSA was delighted to have the opportunity to be a Platinum Sponsor in support of the Southern Ohio Back to School Bash. This community-centered event provides school supplies, backpacks, clothing, haircuts,
lunch and fun activities as well as sweet treats to our local children to help them be ready for all their school needs.

We’re so excited for MCSA employees Deena K***z and Shannon Crockett, both members of the Paducah Area Chamber of Commerce Class #40!

Deena and Shannon are not only both exemplary employees, they’re also dedicated community members who want to make Paducah a great place to live, work, and succeed.

We’re so proud of them both and can’t wait to follow their progress and cheer them on!

We are pleased to announced Leadership Paducah Class #40! This group of 45 individuals is the largest class to date! They will spend ten months together taking a deep-dive into our community and learning about the wide array of unique opportunities it has to offer.

We’re excited to see them carry forward the mission of The Leadership Center by building connections, growing their impact and stepping up as the next generation of changemakers.

Class #40 will meet next week for orientation and will participate in the Leadership Paducah Retreat in August.
