EG4 Hybrid Off-Grid Solar Installation

This installation features a clean, code-conscious deployment of an EG4 6000XP hybrid inverter paired with an EG4 battery energy storage cabinet, providing whole-home power and solar energy management.

The EG4 14.3 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO₄) battery provides 14.3 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of stored electrical energy, allowing a home to maximize the use of self-generated solar energy.

A 14.3 kWh battery can supply:

Essential household circuits for 12–24+ hours, depending on electrical demand.

Typical refrigeration, lighting, internet equipment, televisions, computers, and small kitchen appliances simultaneously.

High-efficiency heat pumps, well pumps, and other intermittent motor loads when paired with a compatible hybrid inverter.

Peak-load management by storing excess solar production during the day and supplying power during evening hours or periods of high utility rates.

At this solar site, our team successfully re-routed the DC feeder circuits by installing them underground from the DC Combiner to the inverter pad.

After executing proper Dig Safe protocols, our subcontractors carefully located and marked all existing utilities to ensure a safe and compliant installation. Given site access constraints, underground routing was the only viable solution that allowed us to maintain full operational accessibility.

Despite weather-related challenges, our crew stayed focused and adaptable. We overcame the obstacles, maintained our schedule, and delivered the project on time and under budget.

RECLOSER BATTERY UPGRADE & RADIO COM'S

WHAT IS A RECLOSER?

A recloser is an automatic high-voltage circuit breaker installed on overhead distribution lines. Its job is to:

Detect faults (like short circuits or lightning strikes)

Open the circuit to stop fault current

Wait a short time

Close (reclose) automatically to see if the fault cleared

On this project, the fiber-optic communications from the DAS (Data Acquisition System) had been damaged. The cost to locate underground utilities, excavate, install, test, and terminate new fiber, particularly under winter conditions, was prohibitively high.

Our team installed two Ubiquiti Nano-Station M2 point-to-point radios—one configured as the transmitter at the main DAS pad and the other as the receiver at the recloser pole. We also installed two DC-DC Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) injectors, allowing the radios to remain powered by the battery systems in the event of an AC power loss.

We also calculated the additional battery loads to determine the new system’s Amp-hour (Ah) demand and selected a 12V 62Ah battery upgrade to ensure the equipment would have sufficient capacity to perform a reclose operation, even after extended downtime.
