Association of Asphalt Paving Technologists - AAPT

On January 17, 1924 a small group of engineers met in Chicago, Illinois to establish an association for consideration of the technology of asphalt paving.

Since then, the Association of Asphalt Paving Technologists has grown from its original 19 charter members to the present roster of over 800 members from every continent in the world. Today AAPT is a leader in the advancement of asphalt paving technology. Members depend on the association as an authoritative source for the latest developments in the field and as a hub for communicating with fellow

professionals. AAPT's three-day Annual Meeting is held every Spring, and includes asphalt-related technical sessions, symposia and workshops presented by experts in all aspects of asphalt paving technology from around the world. Since 1928, these Annual Meeting papers have been published in AAPT's Annual Journal. The Journal now consists of 82 volumes, and is a widely referenced and prestigious source of literature in the field. Derek Nener-Plante is a pavement engineer and founder of DNP Infrastructure LLC. He specializes in asphalt materials, Balanced Mix Design, quality assurance, and construction. Derek contributes to national efforts including FHWA’s Mobile Asphalt Technology Center (MATC), AIEI cooperative agreement, CAPRI, BMD working groups, and TRB committees—helping agencies and industry deliver better-performing pavements. He has a Master's degree in Transportation Engineering from the University of Connecticut and a Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Maine.

Dr. Cheng Ling is the Director of Engineering & Sustainability at Pike Industries, a CRH company based in New Hampshire. Dr. Ling has over 10 years of experience working on the research and development of asphalt materials and sustainability in both academia and industry. He is the current Chair of NAPA’s Committee for Asphalt Research and Technology, a standing member of NCAT Application Steering Committee, a Steering Committee member of Northeast Asphalt User Producer Group, along with other professional societies such as AAPT, ASCE and ASTM.

Gisel Carrasco, P.E. - Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT)

Gisel is the Flexible Pavements Section Director for the Texas Department of Transportation, Materials and Tests Division. In this role, she oversees flexible pavements quality programs for the state and provides technical support to districts and industry. Gisel earned her master’s degree in civil engineering from the University of Texas at El Paso in 2004 and became a registered Professional Engineer in 2008.

🌟 Meet our presenter:
Gerry Huber, M.S., P.E. - Heritage Research Group

Gerry started working for the Saskatchewan Ministry of Transportation when he graduated university in 1978 and paved his first project in 1979. Later, he oversaw mix design specifications for Saskatchewan. In 1988, he joined the Asphalt Institute where he helped update MS-2, Asphalt Mix Design Methods. He joined the Heritage Research Group in 1992. Working with the FHWA he authored AASHTO Practice R 42 The Standard Practice for Developing a Quality Assurance Plan for Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA). In the 2000s, with the asphalt industry in Indiana, he worked with INDOT to implement acceptance specifications including statistics-based specifications. In 2019, he was elected to the Asphalt Pavement Association of Indiana Hall of Fame. He is past president and an Honorary Member of AAPT.
