Here are a few things I have learned about being an entrepreneur. I am starting a lecture series to discuss these topics and how I am still learning. I had no idea what I was getting into as a young 31 year old entrepreneur. I have learned so much about myself, about family life, importance of taking care of our spiritual, mental, phyiscal health and the impact on us by being a business owner on this journey. I didn't realize how much I didn't know on being an entrepreneur until I hired my first teammates, and started growing the business. That is when the education truly started. I will share what I have learned in 38 years and why I am not ready to retire.

This Memorial Day I salute those that gave their lives in the armed services for our country. 57 years later, I still have the article of my neighbor being killed in Vietnam. I was almost 12 years old when my neighbor was killed in Vietnam in 1968. I was outside playing when the Army car drove up and the service men walked to their door. I had no idea what was going on, but something told me, it wasn't good. I remember running into the house to tell my parents what I saw, then our phone rang and my mother screaming he is gone, he is gone and running into the bedroom when our neighbor called to say their son had died in combat. I remember this event like yesterday and the impact it had on our entire block. They lived two doors down from us. I cried at his funeral. He was only 20 years old. He was 9 years older than me and I looked up to him. He was like the big brother I always wanted. His death made the horror of war real for me. I started watching my draft number annually after his death. I remember 6 years later, in 1974 when I had to register for the draft, and the Vietnam war was starting to end. As I filled out my draft registration papers, I thought about Richard. I prayed there would be no more wars. I kept thinking about Richard and the many other young men and women that gave their life in battle for our country. Our block was different after Richard was killed in combat, the laughter was not as loud and the smiles not as bright after his death in Vietnam. Thank you to all the service people that serve our country.

Today was Morehouse College Graduation and I reflected on my life's journey since I entered Morehouse in 1974. Starting with my graduation in 1978, my son's graduation in 2007 and then as a college trustee, I got to attend many graduations and witness history, meet some awesome people, (check out the folks I got to meet) watch Robert Smith announce paying off the debt of the entire class of 2009, and shake the hands of some of classmates sons crossed the stage when they graduated. Thank you Morehouse for changing my life and helping me believe in my dreams! Enjoy this video of pictures starting with my graduation and through the years.
