Snow can’t stop the machine!

Spiniello Companies’ DC Field Operations Team are out there braving the elements to keep critical infrastructure work moving forward. Despite winter conditions, the team continues to advance the sliplining of 800 linear feet of a 78-inch combined sewer with 72-inch HOBAS FRP pipe for DC Water’s Potomac Interceptor (PI) - a vital infrastructure asset that conveys flow from Dulles Airport to the Blue Plains Advanced Wastewater Treatment Facility in Washington DC.

Located within National Park Service (NPS) property along the scenic yet challenging Clara Barton Parkway, this segment of the PI was originally installed in 1963 and has since experienced significant corrosion. Rehabilitation is now essential to preserve system integrity and protect one of the region’s most critical wastewater conveyance pipelines.

Through careful planning, teamwork, and strong field ex*****on, Spiniello is demonstrating exceptional commitment to advancing this high-priority repair, even under adverse weather conditions. Once completed, this major pipe rehabilitation effort will extend the useful life of the interceptor by an estimated 150 years, while also improving hydraulic efficiency for the communities it serves.

Spiniello is your proven partner in delivering innovative trenchless rehabilitation and replacement solutions that renew aging infrastructure and support future generations. Renewing the Past and Building the Future! Proud of our team’s resilience, professionalism, and dedication to delivering
essential infrastructure—no matter the forecast.

Earlier this week, Spiniello Companies hosted a site visit to highlight the ongoing work to bring new life to one of the region’s most critical wastewater assets—the Potomac Interceptor (PI). This pipeline segment includes a 78-inch gravity sewer operating under live-flow conditions, conveying approximately 60 MGD from as far west as Dulles Airport to the Blue Plains Advanced Wastewater Treatment Facility in Washington, DC. The PI is a vital component of the region’s wastewater infrastructure.

Installed in 1963 and now exhibiting corrosion in several sections, the PI is undergoing a major structural renewal effort. TYLin as engineer, oversaw the preparations to slip-line 800 LF of the interceptor located within National Park Service (NPS) property along the Clara Barton Parkway—an area that requires careful coordination and planning. This week marked a key milestone as Spiniello began slip-lining the 800 LF segment with 72-inch HOBAS FRP pipe, extending the interceptor’s useful life by an estimated 150 years while increasing hydraulic capacity.

It was a pleasure reconnecting with familiar colleagues and seeing firsthand what collaboration, partnership, and strong industry relationships can achieve. The ā€œMission Focusedā€ demonstrated commitment, ingenuity and teamwork displayed are driving this important infrastructure improvement forward.

Thank you to DC Water, WSSC, TYLin, Hobas Pipe USA, Kennedy Jenks, Brown & Caldwell, JMT, GFT, Stantec, Mott MacDonald and the many other key infrastructure regional experts who joined us for this event.

Spiniello Companies’ Phase 5 of the Upper Little Conestoga Interceptor Project marks another major step forward in strengthening wastewater infrastructure for the Lancaster Area Sewer Authority (LASA). This important effort is being delivered in partnership with RK&K, the engineer of record, whose design expertise has been helpful throughout planning and ex*****on.

Spiniello’s project team Justin Jacobs, Cesar Gonzalez, and Chris Billak P.E. - whose project management and field experience are driving the successful rehabilitation of this critical regional asset.

Phase 5 includes the full structural rehabilitation of 4,026 LF of 42-inch sewer and 1,174 LF of 48-inch sewer utilizing Cured-in-Place Pipe (CIPP) technology. The scope also features 216 VF of manhole rehabilitation, restoring structural integrity and reducing inflow and infiltration throughout the system.

Working in challenging and environmentally sensitive area, the team installed 1,500 access mats through wooded and wetland areas, along with comprehensive erosion and sediment controls, including silt fencing. To maintain uninterrupted sewer service, a dual-barrel 24-inch bypass system capable of pumping up to 35 MGD was engineered and installed from upstream to downstream during lining operations. Additional project elements include heavy cleaning and detailed CCTV inspection to ensure accurate condition assessment and rigorous quality control.

LASA’s Phase 5 is now nearing completion—another successful milestone delivered safely, efficiently, and with long-term use in mind. Spiniello Companies’ Justin Jacobs and Johnson, Mirmiran & Thompson’s Steven Pickel, PE conducted a site visit of DC Water’s Piney Branch Sewershed Rehabilitation Project, located throughout Northwest Washington, DC.

The project focused on the structural rehabilitation of approximately 13,800 LF of combined sewer pipelines, ranging from 36-inch to 78-inch in diameter and various shapes, using the Geopolymer Lining System (GLS). The scope also included internal point repairs and lateral/pipe reinstatements.

Five (5) large junction chambers were structurally rehabilitated using GLS, and the pipe rehabilitation was performed through a combination of open-cut excavation and trenchless methods. Seventy (70) existing manholes were rehabilitated using various techniques, including GLS application, step replacement, grade ring replacement, and frame and cover upgrades.
In addition, three (3) new manholes were constructed and lined with GLS.

Approximately 400 LF of 36-inch to 51-inch diameter pipelines and one junction chamber located at Sherman Circle NW within NPS property were abandoned. Throughout the project, extensive bypass pumping, dewatering, erosion and sediment control, traffic management, and site restoration were also executed.

Spiniello is your proven partner to provide innovative trenchless rehabilitation and replacement solutions to renew aging infrastructure that will support our future generations - Renewing the Past and Building the Future of Our Nation’s Capital Pipeline Infrastructure.
