Our latest big project at our garden area is a four bay compost barn, so we can do some of our own composting. David has always wanted to build using the timber frame method. He loves the old school techniques and is adding his own special touches to make it beautiful and strong. You can see by the pictures he has created 18-inch tubes that are three feet deep to support the large timbers. Then he had stirrups made to support the posts. These will not be going anywhere; very sturdy. They each had 4 pieces of rebar welded to the bottom and pushed down into the concrete. That made for some tedious lining up when the cement was firming up, but it turned out great.

We plan to put a metal roof on the barn that will feed to gutters that will be attached to our second large water catchment area. This one will be about 3000 gallons. Good plans ahead as we move into 2026. 🌺

Calling out to all of my prayer warriors. We got confirmation today that my most aggressive brain tumor is growing again. I kind of knew it was coming over the past month due to my last MRI and problems with my right foot and knee. Starting this coming week, I will start another six rounds of chemo. I truly appreciate your love and prayers. ❤

We enjoyed a great Grow Local Field Day yesterday with plenty of folks wanting to learn more about gardening. People were able to swap plants, and seeds, tour the Roots of Texas Gardens, learn to plant watermelons, learn about canning foods, how to build wicking tubs, what types of plants are native to our area, children's book reading, and of course sign up for the Lil' Growers and the Backyard Growers. We want to thank all of those who came out to help us share their knowledge with others in the garden.

So far we have over 100 kids signed up to participate in the Lil' Growers, and about 30 signed up as Backyard Growers.

LATE REGISTRATION: If you were not able to join us on Saturday, stop by the Foundation Farm at 523 South Mulberry in Luling to do late registration. Bonnie will have signup sheets, and seeds through March 31.

We look forward to seeing everyone on Saturday March 7, at The Station from 9:30-12:00. We will be doing the sign-up sessions for the Lil' Growers and the Backyard Growers so all ages can participate in growing melons for the Thump!

We will also have a plant and seed swap, along with learning sessions on creating wicking tubs for growing healthy plants while using less water. We will also get to hear the newest children's book for our area; focused on farm life and flowers.

There will be tours of our growing areas so you can ask questions and learn for your own growing ideas. For those wanting to grow melons there will be a planting demonstration as well as instructions for during your growing season.

All activities are FREE. We just want to encourage or community to learn to grow what they want to grow in their gardens. 🌺

Cool weather crops are doing well in the high tunnel and the raised beds. Yesterday we did our first big harvest of broccoli for the season. The big heads are out, but they will still produce bountiful florets for the next month or two. We were able to harvest our first cauliflower of the season as well. Very shortly we should be harvesting cabbage, collard greens, celery and turnip greens. Carrots and beets should be a bit later in the season. We both love growing! God creates miracles in the garden every day😊.

We are in the process of clearing out some of our old tomato cages. We used to farm several acres, but we are downsizing to our acre and a half. These cages are very sturdy and allow tomatoes or peppers to have solid support. The open space at the bottom allows drip lines to run through without interference.

Cages are $2 each

This cute pair showed up unexpectedly. They had obviously been gone from their previous home for a while. We are trying to find someone who would like to adopt one or both of them. They appear to be white Sheppard / Lab mix, probably about 6-8 months old. They appear to be a brother and sister. They have a gentle temperament and appreciate affection. If you would be interested in adopting them, please send me a private message and we can make arrangements.

Back Yard Growers update:

Today our three top watermelon growers enjoyed their spot in the parade. They all had fun and got to answer watermelon questions about those tasty Charleston Grey watermelons as they made their way around town.

Yesterday David and I enjoyed a great afternoon hosting a new piece of history, the Luling Watermelon Thump's First Annual Back Yards Growers Competition. Our first year of competition brought ten growers together in a friendly competition. Saturday morning our top three growers will ride in the parade as part of their celebration for their win. This competition is all about enjoyment, bragging rights, and smiles.

We are excited to see folks getting excited about what they can learn to grow in their own backyard, front yard, raised beds, you name it. We love sharing our knowledge of growing with others in order to see the excitement come alive for them when they get things to grow, that they did not realize they could. We hope to see this spirit grow each year as more folks get interested in seeing what they can grow for themselves.

All of these growers get two benefits from growing in their own space. They all had a competition melon, but also have many melons left over to enjoy however they see fit. Some will enjoy eating them all while some will choose to give away or sell theirs.

They were each handed 20 seeds in order to grow their watermelons. The melons in this competition are my favorite tasting classic watermelons, Charleston Greys. They are a juicy sweet tasting red meat watermelon. It may be hard to imagine, but you could actually grow enough watermelons to fill the entire back end of a pickup truck with just those twenty seeds. Nature can be pretty amazing that way. David and I are always available to help answer any growing questions you might have where we can help out. We look forward to seeing everyone again next year.

This competition is all about you and your families learning to feed yourselves and having fun with it. With love from the Luling Watermelon Thump and Roots of Texas!
