I had big plans this week to post so many videos that nobody could possibly forget about our race this weekend.
But as we get ready for a busy day of final preparations and an exciting Saturday, I found myself sitting at my Cricut making a decal for one of our racers' cars.
The decal honors Sophia, a brave young girl who recently lost her battle with cancer. Sophia wasn't a racer, but she was a friend to one of our racing families through their own cancer journey. As I sat there cutting out the decal, it reminded me why we started this journey in the first place.
Lockport Soapbox Derby is about the kids.
In the chaos of planning an event, finding sponsors, coordinating vendors, fundraising, and keeping everything organized, it's easy to get caught up in the details. But at the heart of it all are the children who line up at the start hill.
Soapbox found my son, Gunner, during a difficult transition from elementary school to middle school. Through this sport, we've met some incredible kids and families. By bringing Soap Box Derby back to Lockport, we're creating opportunities for children who may not have found their place in traditional sports.
Our racers include:
💙 The child who struggles to focus.
💙 The one who overthinks every move they make.
💙 A cancer survivor.
💙 A child who is blind and has limited depth perception.
💙 A child facing ongoing health challenges.
💙 A child who struggled to fit in.
This weekend isn't just about racing. It's about confidence, friendships, perseverance, and giving kids a place to belong.
So when you come out to watch Lockport Rolls Again this Saturday, know that you're not just watching a race. You're watching kids overcome obstacles, build confidence, and find their place on the hill.
As we make history by bringing Soap Box Derby back to Lockport after 40 years, these kids are the reason we're here. ❤️🏁
