The Carpenter's Son - Dan Nichols

The Carpenter's Son - Dan Nichols A local family owned company specializing in home repair and renovation. A single source for all things construction related.

The Carpenter's Son is a small locally owned business serving the London, KY area. Specializing in custom home repairs. After seeing the need for a one call does it all repair company, Dan began making service calls doing home repairs in the evenings after finishing his day job with a local construction company. It didn't take long to see the great demand for a company that would simply show up, t

ake pride in what they do and fulfill their commitments. In October 2014 the Nichols family stepped out on faith and waited to see what God had in store for this little company. Dan resigned his position with a local General Contracting Firm and The Carpenter's Son became a full time family owned business in December 2015. Since that very first day in December, God has been faithful to provide an overwhelming response for the many services offered by the Carpenter's Son.

Had the opportunity last fall to build some additional pole storage for Jackson Energy Cooperative. 36" tile, buried 5' below grade, set prefabricated steel uprights into the tile and filled with concrete.

Built a covered patio a while back for some friends. Custom stairs, rough sawn hemlock, and galvanized roofing for the finished ceiling pulled off a rustic look and feel for this newly renovated old farm house.

Finally finished up our big deck job in town today! Lots of lumber, labor, fasteners, and concrete. This particular customer was very specific about his desire to have lattice railings. For a carpenter, building with lattice is like a flooring company installing porch screen for new flooring in your living room. It's not that it can't be done, it's just difficult to work with and takes a little time. In the end he made the right choice. He set his deck apart from the average boilerplate design.

I found myself surveying the assortment of "antique" tools hanging from the ceiling at Cracker Barrell this morning. I was surprised to see some of the same tools that I carry in my trailer every day. This exact same brand and model slide nail puller is a regular "go to" for me quite often. At the same time, the latest battery operated saw from Milwaukee is also stored in my tool trailer. I'm pretty sure my grandfather would be unimpressed that I've gone almost completely cordless since none of his tools starting out had a cord either!

If your contractor isn't properly flashing your new deck, you could be losing valuable years of service due to potential rot and decay. All deck joists should be capped with some type of protective flashing. Almost any self sealing membrane will do the job. Screw holes from the decking into the joists are a favorite path for water intrusion. Before long the joists are split and cracked at every hole along the top. This leads to deck boards loosening and premature failure of fastners. Once this occurs it all but eliminates the option to re-deck the structure in the future. Ledger boards against a house are particularly susceptible to these unfavorable conditions when not protected. Moisture is trapped between the ledger board and exterior wall of the home. "If it can't dry, it will die". Proper counter flashing is an absolute must for ledger boards.

Started a new deck 2 weeks ago just off Main St. Working inside city limits certainly has its challenges. We hand mixed nearly 3 cu. yds. of concrete for foundation piers and installed 72 1/2"×8" galv. carriage bolts. The new code will no longer allow 4x4's as support posts and everything structural must be notched into a 6x6 post. Even if that means removing most of the structural integrity.

That satifying moment when you realize your kid has enough construction experience to recognize the intended purpose of a foundation vent does not include "natural gas portal" when he passed by this house near his college dorm. I will say hats off to the pipe fitters at the local gas company though.
