“Does solar still pay off in 2026?” We get that question more than any other right now.

The honest answer is that the math changed, and for most LADWP homes it still works.

The direct federal credit for buying a system ended December 31, 2025. If you're reading anything that says otherwise, check the date on it.

What changed is who claims that value. Under a prepaid lease, a finance company owns the system and claims the federal commercial credit, then passes it through as a reduction in what the homeowner pays. For LADWP customers that currently lands close to 30% off. Ownership transfers after five years, once the lease is paid.

The part people miss is what's happening on the other side of the ledger. Southern California utility rates have moved in one direction for a long time. Every kWh your roof makes is one you're not buying at whatever the rate turns into by 2030.

If you set solar aside last year when the credit expired, the structure is different now.

Has anyone actually walked you through what replaced it?

If you looked at solar last year and set it aside when the credit expired, the structure is different now. Did anyone actually explain what replaced it, or did you just hear the credit was gone?

Homeowners comparing solar bids in 2026 are asking about price. Fewer are asking whether the company will still exist in five years.

The last two years have been rough on residential solar. Plenty of companies that were signing contracts in 2023 have folded, and their customers are learning that a 25-year warranty is worth exactly as much as the company standing behind it.

For context on where we sit. We've been installing in Los Angeles since 2008, and installing Enphase equipment since 2010. Enphase certifies us as a Platinum Installer, their top tier.

None of that shows up on a quote. It matters in year seven, when an inverter needs attention and someone has to pick up the phone.

If you're comparing bids right now, ask every company on your list how long they've been installing and who certifies them. The answers vary more than you'd expect.

It's still a smart time to go solar!

If you're reading anything about home solar that still tells you to claim the 30% federal tax credit, check the date on it.

For a cash or loan purchase, that credit ended December 31, 2025.

What far fewer homeowners know is that the credit didn't leave the industry. It changed hands.

Under a prepaid lease, a finance company owns the system and claims the federal commercial credit, then passes that value through as a reduction in what the homeowner pays. For LADWP customers that currently lands close to 30% off the cost of the system. Ownership transfers to the homeowner after five years, once the lease is paid.

Two things worth understanding about that.

It doesn't depend on your tax situation. The old credit was only worth something if you had enough tax liability to absorb it, which quietly left a lot of people out. This is a reduction in price, not a filing.

And the exact percentage moves. The finance side adjusts it periodically, so any number you see in a post, this one included, is a snapshot. The number that counts is the one on a current quote.

We've been installing in Los Angeles since 2008.
